About Blockhouse Bay Intermediate
Blockhouse Bay Intermediate builds on the strong foundations established at primary school in the areas of literacy, numeracy, inquiry, arts, sport and digital technologies. Our teachers develop a deep appreciation for each child’s stage of development in regards to the curriculum and can tailor each child’s programme to support and accelerate them within an inclusive and interactive learning environment.
Children are taught to respect and celebrate each other’s differences and to encourage each other to strive for excellence. We understand that we all learn in different ways and we provide many opportunities to explore diverse learning experiences which include Integrated Inquiries that evolve strong foundations in;
- Science inquiry (Including education for sustainability)
- English and languages (Te Reo, Mandarin, Korean)
- Mathematics
- Technology (Design, Digital and Hard Materials)
- Arts (Dance, Drama, Music and Visual Arts)
Underpinning our learning lies Social Sciences and an emphasis on promoting an appreciation of our place in a rapidly changing global community. Growing active learners who understand having a purpose in life requires having a life of purpose.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ If your child is at least somewhat academically capable send them to a school that will actually foster such abilities and cater to higher ability learning. Although BHBI emphasises the act of getting stars and therefore "achieving" it is merely an incentive scheme in which children are pitted in against each other in a competition based on populism and supposed effort. Not only is this a highly subjective system but for some it can be quite emotionally demanding. Furthermore this system does not provide any essential social and communicative skills that a student will need in their later life, neither does it promote the cultivation of emotional maturity. Rather than creating a learning environment in which children are motivated by their curiosity and genuine interest to learn about topics that fascinate them, which will allow them to gauge properly, the future decisions they make, the school pushes your child through a system that emphasises living up to the teacher's expectation of the student. All in all be wary of what you hear of this school as it has gone through drastic changes over the years.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ There is very little focus on academics. Their main focus is on sports. There were many people in some Year 8 classes that didn’t know how to do single digit addition, that is very worrying. There were some people in the class, who got the wrong answer 5 times when asked “5 + 8” Also, they don’t always spend their donation money and budget on the right things to spend it on. There have been many articles in the news of this school inappropriately spending their budget. I highly do not recommend this school.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Can I just say that the people that didn't do 4 or 5 stars just hate school. There are great teachers there. My teacher is miss Parag and she's a great teacher. First of all, they make us do P.E for us to stay healthy and they have a great Haka too!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Scarred me for life, I hope by brain can someday just forget about these people and the bad memories along with it. This place taught me nothing in 2 years, I don’t know how I survived with the horrible teachers (+students) and their teaching, but hope you all have a good time here!
