About Braemar House - B&B and YHA Hostel Whanganui

Braemar House has had an interesting history. It was constructed in 1880 by John Frame McBeth, the postmaster of Wanganui till 1895. In that year is was passed on to Mr "Hope" Gibbons. Hopeful Gibbons was named after the character in John Bunyan's "Pilgrim’s Progress". He went on to become the mayor of Whanganui in 1924 till 1927 and was the founder of one of New Zealand's largest family businesses. He sold the building in 1911 to Misses Alice and Kit Gordon, who converted it into Braemar Hospital for private, surgical, and maternity care. They named it “Braemar Private Hospital” as their clan, the Gordans have their annual gathering at Braemar Castle.

In 1927 the property passed to Mrs Eliza Christie who firstly continued the private hospital, running it for 50 years. In the latter years is was a geriatric home as the cost of running a hospital become too much.

By 1976 the hospital closed its doors. It stood empty for about a year till the owner of the Riverside Tavern, Bryce Jones saw its potential as a Bed and Breakfast and hostel for his guests at the Tavern. Bryce named it the "Riverside Inn". Bryce's son Dean managed it with Gary and Marilyn Ruby. Gary started some of the renovations. It was then sold, together with the Tavern to Clayton Crowe, and had a chequered history with several owners until 1987 when Don and Marree Adams bought the lease from a Wellington owner. They were energetic enthusiasts for the potential of the fine house. Don and Maree started the YHA hostel, ran 4 and 5 day canoe trips on the river and then coach tours in the area. They also did the rural mail run up the Whanganui River Road to Pipiriki and took passengers. To this day guests can still book to go on the mail run and get an insight to the unique communities it serves.  After a few more owners it fell into disrepair.

In 1991 the "Riverside Inn" passed to the Gedye family. Phillip and Joy continued the renovations of the grand old lady.

In 2002, the property was renamed "Braemar House" by the new owners, Clive Rivers and Rob Gooch. They took over the YHA hostel and B&B restyled and continued the renovation of the house over the next 14 years and saw thousands of visitors from every corner of the world through the doors. They have now retired to the good life in the country nearby.

The new owners, (the 12th owners) Calvyn and Alice, and their daughter Claire, took over the Bed & Breakfast and YHA Hostel in January 2017. You will find that they are delightful hosts who will do their utmost to make you welcome. We do hope that you will enjoy Braemar House and Whanganui.

We spent one night in the guesthouse. The owner, Kelvin, is really nice and gave awesome local advice for cycle routes and dining options. The room was small but comfortable and we didn’t mind the shared bathrooms. They rent bikes for $5/half day and this is a great way to see the town. Lovely location, just next to the river.

In response to your response: There is no need to defend children. That is a bold statement to make when the complaint did not have to do with the children themselves. That was made extremely clear and it is appalling that you are trying to change the issue to that... simply to look good. My partner and I grew up playing completive sports at a national level. Review: I am an experienced backpacker and hotel management professional, and to be honest, I am quite surprised by the star rating of this hostel. After a few nights of a negative experience, I decided to respectfully share my concerns with the owners (their moment of truth), however they jumped to defensive mode & showed no sympathy. This told me right away how much they actually care about their guests. See story below if interested. My partner and I stayed for 6 nights. The first three nights were okay - the room is very basic but that’s fine for us. It’s a know β€˜joke’ between guests that the low quality pots & pans will burn your food and set the fire alarm off. Our experience went downhill the last three nights. A children’s hockey team showed up, and essentially we were sharing the small space with approx 15 7-12 year olds. I am 100% for kids and extracurricular activities & travelling, but we would have appreciated a heads up from the owners. It felt as though the entire space should have been blocked off for the team. We were woken up each morning of the weekend at 7am by kids screaming outside our door (kids will be kids), the two washrooms were rarely available for use, the team decided to make the kitchen their own, and didn’t provide space & cleanliness for us to use. I think anyone could anticipate this would have affected our experience. I wanted to be open with the owners to see if they could assist us in anyway. These are some of the comments I received (quoted as well as I can remember): β€œYou can go sleep at a motel tonight if you want” β€œ$65 is the cheapest thing you will find in NZ” and β€œ you know this is a hostel right?” I took from this - we should expect low quality when staying at a hostel. β€œIt’s not my responsibility to let guests know about a large group coming” The list goes on. Much of this was said with a smirk. I will note, the owners did offer us a different room, but at this point I didn’t want to take it because I was so appalled by their lack of customer service. Hospitality 101 - treat people as if they were guests in your own home. A small act of kindness, compassion & understanding goes a long way!

Stayed in hostel. Washroom uses are limited, it was always busy and it is also outside - for $75 a night I prefer to keep warm. I believe there are about 4 cabins, and 2 dorm rooms, and only 2 (1 toilet in each/1 shower in each) washrooms. Room vibe was so dark - no where to put clothes either. Bed - very unconformable for a couple, kept falling inwards all night. Had the unpleasant circumstances of staying when it was packed: - kitchen was always in use - kettle looks gross on the inside - woken up at 7am by loud guests. I’ve stayed all over NZ and for $50-$80 you can find some gems ?. Bad service - felt like they prefer to fill rooms rather than provide a warm stay. Stay somewhere else .

I stayed in the B&B. I couldn’t fault the place. The service was great. Quick communication when booking. The whole place was clean. Great quality bed, sheets and pillows. Exceptional linen and nothing was a bother for the owners, even though they were full.

My second stay at Braemar House. This time for 2 nights, previously (in 2019) for 6weeks. Since my previous stay the kitchen has had new induction hot-plates fitted and other refurbishments. It is most suitable for just about anyone who likes friendly, helpful and knowledgeable hosts and a clean and safe enviroment. Many thanks Alice and Kelvin and it was nice seeing you again. Peter

Home away from home, the owners here are so friendly and welcoming. We stayed in one of there twin rooms. The toilets are nice and clean, showers were good pressure. When we arrived back of a night one of the owners ran down the hall to switch on all the lights for us and make it homely. Would stay again. Thanks Alice and family! :)

Alice and Calvin were so welcoming to our large group of 14 ladies. They went out of there way to make sure we had everything we needed. The beautiful old house was so clean and tidy. The beds where comfortable, showers good pressure and lovely bathrooms. We felt like it was home away from home. The bonus was being able to use the pizza oven. Calvin prepped the oven and taught us how to cook wood fired pizzas 10/10. The kitchens had everything we needed from platters, plates to plenty of glasses and fridge space. Thank you for making our night so memorable and wonderful. We would stay again.
