Rooms, showers and bathrooms were quite clean, and the atmosphere is nice. The whole place was pretty cold though...and the kitchen towels were needing a wash. If you're really alergic to cats don't stay here. There is one sweet gray cat that wanders about.

The fact that I stayed in this hostel for 3.5 months says a lot already but I should probably explain a little more.. If you stay in Chester Street you can be sure that you’re located very central, but also close to some nature like a park next door. It’s a nice neighborhood so don’t worry about any constant noises or crime that could bother you. The house itself is very clean (s/o to the great staff ?) and couldn’t be more cozy! But the one thing that really makes you feel like home are the amazing people that stay there! Shoutout to the Chester Street Family and to all the lovely people I got to meet during my stay! Thanks for everything guys ? Oh and shoutout to Antony and Karen, you guys rock!! ?

Cozy, little, homey hostel which feels much more like a shared flat than a regular hostel, as the max number of beds in a room is 3. The rooms are all decorated very homely. The staff is very caring and friendly and provides good insider tips about what to do in Christchurch and around. City Center is at walking distance which makes it very easy to discover the city. When the sun is shining – which did very often while I was there – it is great to sit outside in the little garden (: I’ll definitely stay again at Chester Street, when I come back to Christchurch!

Positive: It’s was super comfy and really felt like home. The kitchen was super clean and loved the lounge room couches. Negative: The room I was in was very musty and needed a good air out. It was very stuffy and found it hard to sleep at night. Also one of the people in the room seemed to be long term and had a lot of food in the room which was probably adding to the musty-ness of the room. I think just more cleaning/care needs to be done for the room.

what should I say about this place to put it in the right spot? This place is awesome, the owner is a kind and smart guy who always takes his time to have a chat with you. The house is clean and compare to other hostels nice and quite with a great working kitchen. (fresh eggs and herbs are even in the garden! The rooms are cozy with single beds not packed like in every other hostel. It's just a great place to stay for a day or a month. I miss this place now already but I will definitely come back if my travels ever bring me back to Christchurch!

Positive: Very calm, colorful and cozy. It doesn't feel like a business but more like a big shared house. A good change from the crowded backpackers. The owners try to get to know you a bit, what you're doing in NZ, etc. But if you don't want to talk, they leave you alone of course ^^ I was in a shared room of 3, I think it was the largest capacity for a room, which is good. Very quiet at night, the loudest it got during my stay was just couple of people chatting in the living room, which was not loud at all xD. Got some free fresh eggs from time to time. I've been traveling in NZ for a year now, staying mostly in backpacker hostels, and this one was probably my favorite in the whole country :). Negative: Would probably need a couple more storage or hooks to hang clothes/towels in the shared room as all of our stuff was just lying on the floor ^^ But honestly it's nothing compared to the overall warm feeling of the house, I'm just a very organized person xP.

Positive: Lovely, relaxing home/ hostel. It has homely feel with a large kitchen dinning room and a big, cosy living room. The kitchen is fully stocked with the basics to help you cook a delicious meal and the garden has a bbq! We really enjoyed our stay here and other people stating (long term) at the hostel were friendly.. Negative: Would have been nice to have had a slightly later check out than 10am, say 11ish. However we were picking up our campervan so we were keen to get on the road and start our adventure..

What was once a loved renovation project turned backpackers is now just a forgotten inconvenience for the owners of Chester street backpackers. 2 out of 3 sinks don't work, 1 out of 2 showers, hardly ever cleaned, old stove that doesn't work well anymore, mice inside, tiny- expensive rooms, what's sad is the owners know about all of this and don't seem to care anymore. They really have seemed to have given up on the place.
