About Chiwi Catering

Our story started on the other side of the big blue, in Australia. This is where Ricardo - operating manager and originally from Chile - fell in love with Spanish food. With over 20+ years of experience, he worked in some of Melbourne’s finest establishments.

Being trained under Spanish, Greek, Italian, Asian and French chefs, Ricardo has a wide understanding of multiple cuisines, but it was the Spanish cuisine that stole his heart as this runs through his blood and it takes him back to his roots.

Traveling from Melbourne to NZ, Ricardo didn’t find much of ‘his’ food around. So since 2017, he has been spreading his passion and love for Spanish and Latin-American food all over Aotearoa!

In summer he loves catering for some of the country’s biggest events & markets such as One Love, NZ Tattoo Festival and Festival of Lights, whilst in winter he enjoys serving more restaurant-y and hands on food from NP’s buzzing food hub.

Live, love, eat.

We are the Taranaki Food Review Group and our visit today was organised by us for the purpose of giving our most accurate and meaningful reviews. My first review is about an Empanada. It's a light and crispy cooked pastry with both toasty and doughy flavours. It's filled with a very liquid, quality stringy cheese. The dish as a whole has toasty notes and doughy notes and an oily flavour. The dish is extremely enjoyable, delivered by the comforting combination of cheese and pastry and the flavour of oil. The tomatoes in the spicy salsa were juicy. The calamari is a main dish and I'll review it now, it was slippery but buttery and soft it has a course and chewy, coating that tastes floury. We had 2 dipping sauces, a soft aioli and a sharp, traditional recipe chili sauce and it was nice to choose between the 2 from piece to piece of calamari. And it comes with a topping of lemon juice. In review, the paella's bright colour was fun and the salty taste throughout the dish makes it great as a main because each mouthful is enjoyable. The dish becomes more interesting and flavourful with the good mix of herbs or spices in the rice. The rice barely clumped together which is right for paella and the rice was soft on the outside and harder on the inside which is right for paella. It costs $15 and can be served quickly because of the cooking method used. I enjoyed a cool glass of sangria and freshly sliced lemon with my mains. Churros are my next item to review. They had a very light, crispy, crunchy exterior. And a lightly coloured surface with a very fine coating of crystalized cinnamon sugar, which is a pervasive taste in the churro. The soft center gave me bites of warm, sticky batter. I had fun eating this great tasting dish, getting sugar on my fingers and eating them all before they cooled down. The outdoor dining area is visually busy and full of eye-catching decor and the presence of nature. It was an excellent place to eat.

The best ever churros and the loaded Nachos were done deliciously - fresh authentic crunch and an amazing cheesey sauce. Paella not so good but it didn't matter by then :)

Had the paella here, was nice, but not amazing. I'm sure many might like it but it's not authentic enough for my taste. Didn't have the wedges but they did look epic.

Perfect bite on a road side. Freshly made Spanish culinary delights in the little nook of food truck corner on Liardet Str. This time we raided Chiwi Catering truck. Its Chilean owner Ricardo Hormazabal managed to marry world’s favourite South American recipes with the finest New Zealand ingredients. Everyone finds something they like. Paella, empanadas, churros, calamari, alcohol-free sangria. And a hospitable smile from Ricardo and Ashlee.
