Big rooms and decent beds, but apart from that there's not a whole lot going for it.
We didn't see staff apart from at check in in the pub downstairs.
Location is 10 minutes walk to the beach in the tiny town.
The likely once grand building has seen better days - much like the rest of the town.
The room itself was not bad with a big comfy double bed and ok bathroom.
There was advertised breakfast daily but at check-in the guy said the chef only came for breakfast if there was a minimum of 7 people wanting it so that was that gone. He told us there was a kitchen, which was useful to keep some stuff in the fridge but otherwise it was dirty and practically non existent with only a half broken microwave, and a couple of bits of crockery and cutlery plus a kettle and Toaster, and a "lounge" that wasn't all that pleasant and the TV in there didn't work.
We were in a room just above the bar and there was a band playing below (it was Saturday night) til after midnight with music playing til after 1am.
There's not much to keep you in Opunake unless you're a surfer (there is a nice shortish coastal walk however) so you may want to look elsewhere. If you're committed to Opanuke and want somewhere cheap and plan on sticking to your room and going out for all meals then this place may do.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ I stayed 3 nights but paid for 4 in advance for a single room. Rauol the manager gave me a double room which I assumed to be a free upgrade. But it soon became clear his assistant manager wanted to price gouge me after I had prepaid the four nights at $30 a night for a single room. Rauols assistant manager said that I would have to pay more because I was in a double room a rookie mistake for someone like me who has been a platinum hotel member with another hotel chain and a night porter. I refused to pay more and left on my last paid day on Sunday. The assistant manager said he would ring Rauol to sort it out. There was nothing to sort out, by Rauol accepting two payments of $60 he had entered into a contract for a single room rate. Rauols assistant should of made a decision on his own either to move me to a single room or apologize. He was out of his depth and should realise he has only got to rely on new Zealand domestic travellers of which I am. You don't treat return customers like this he didn't apologize. Beware if Rauol or this guy offer you a room upgrade get it in writing or prepay on booking.com like I did. Also the bar went to 1am noisy on Saturday the hours on Google said 10.30pm Friday finished at 10.30pm ok. Rauol in fairness let me safely park my car around the back free. Rauol remind this guy that this is not acceptable to do to new Zealanders your current and only market at the moment. The room was nice with ensuite bathroom.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ It's a very nice old pub with some really cool old stuff, the staff were amazing, the jukebox and pool tables were free, it has gaming, I really couldn't think of a bad thing to say. Loved it.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Overnight at the Club in single room. Really affordable and while the decor is tired the helpful staff make the place worth a visit. Shared bathroom upstairs is well in need of a redecorate but the showers are great and the other facilities are clean . I will stay again
