β β β β β We stayed at this DOC site for a week, what a wonderful place! It has many secluded camping spots, lots of trees so plenty of shade. There are 2 hot showers, and ample long drop toilets that are kept clean daily. We were surprised they weren't smelly at all. We came just after the biggest rush, so don't know what it's like when it's at the peak of the season, but we found it very satisfying staying here. Everything you need, with the hot showers, just a bit above basic, though others might think otherwise. The river runs past the campground and has several swimming holes of various size, very enjoyable in the hot weather. It's close to Whangamata (10-15 minute drive) with all it's cafes and beaches, but far enough away from it that you really feel out of the hussle and bussle, a little world of it's own. There are some really nice walks too, though we didn't have time to explore as much as we wanted. The general public walks and bikes through too, and do not always regard sleeping campers.
All in all, definitely a place to return to time and time again. A very friendly host too!

β β β β β Lucky with warm weather. Nice people, great for bikes and motocross. Bird calls, native area. Maintained tracks ideal for hiking.

β β β β β This is a great playground to get away from it all, camp and do some walks, although it can be busy at times. Disappointing to see and hear so few native birds and plenty of predators near the campsites which should be the easiest areas to control. I went for a walk out on the road at night by Whangaiterenga campsite with a thermal scope and counted 12 large rats (some on the river rocks) and a possum. We can do better.
