A popular place in summer where young folks jump off the pier for fun and entertainment. It's also the Eastbourne terminal for the East-by-West Ferry (Dominion Post Ferry) which provides a convenient, transport alternative into Wellington direct from EB. This iconic pier appears in many golden-hour, EB photo-shots because the sun conveniently sets "behind" and in stark contrast to the pier. In summer on fine days this scenery is breath-taking because sunset colours are at their most vibrant. For recreation one can hire a kayak from the nearby shed and join the swimmers, divers, boaters and skiers, etc. As for the facilities these include a bus-stop, changing rooms, toilets (cf. my photo of the well-maintained, khaki-coloured, wooden building near the pier entrance), and an open-air shower, all conveniently located close by. This pier offers more than its perceived "economic" (transportation) value because of its larger, intrinsic and aesthetic value to the community and visitors alike. It is more than a ferry terminal to the users because it offers a feel-good, happiness factor, a modern currency that is used to gauge a country's / community's success and not by GDP growth alone. (The pics were taken in 2018 but show otherwise because I had not set the date correctly on my then new camera). ....................The Perfect Travel Trifecta ..................... Stop 8845: The Days Bay Wharf Bus Transit Station is conveniently located just before the wharf's entrance and # 83, 81 buses stop here enroute to Wellington. The Days Bay Ferry Terminal is located on the wharf itself, a few metres before the end of the pier. It offers good shelter and travel info, complete with routes and timetables for its route into Wellington city. Stop 9845: I mention this bus-stop here because it is located opposite Stop 8845 making the close proximity of these 3 terminals a godsend for EB residents especially during bad weather. With a little forward planning you could synchronise your travel arrangements to make seamless journeys to and from Wellington city during peak hours. This makes the ferry service a huge bonus for EB residents.
