★ ★ ★ ★ ★ A nice DOC building. We were helped by a very nice employee who told us about the glowworms in the old mines. What a hidden gem! I liked this more than the glacier walk. Thanks DOC for directing us to this walk!

The visitor centre is open every day (except Christmas Day) and their Rangers are on hand to warmly welcome visitors to the region.
Services include providing the latest information on walks, hikes, routes and weather in the Franz Josef and Fox Glacier areas, a free booking service for all activities, an assortment of digital media content and a full range of conservation products.
DOC Rangers love to share their insights and first hand knowledge of the region and to help visitors to find ways to get out and explore the West Coast's many incredible natural wonders. Be sure to visit and join them in celebrating the West Coast's awesome natural heritage

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ easily some of the best service we've ever received at a DOC centre! the woman who helped us and gave us track status information was SO pleasant and helpful. We didn't love our stay at Franz Joseph, but this interaction was what stood out positively. Great team here.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ So I get that everyone is aware of climate change and the glacier melting- see below. Why do you then allow tourists catch helicopters using 200litres of fuel per hour to be flown onto the glacier?!
