★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The Ernest Davis steps are named for a Mayor of Auckland and are situated by Logan Bank....which has more historical significance than the steps themselves being the remains of the home of Sir Logan Campbell...regarded as Father of Auckland. In 1960, the site was donated to the public by a mayor of Auckland, Sir Ernest Davis (1872-1962). Still used as a reserve (2014), surviving remains of Logan Bank include a concrete retaining wall, garden features and in-ground remnants.
Some of the history is noted on an information board at the Ernest Davis Lookout situated at the top of the steps. The area is categorized as Historic Place Category 2. The path and steps link Anzac Avenue and Beach Road. Anzac Ave has significance as being one of the first roads in NZ to be constructed of concrete. The Anzac Road entrance to the steps is not far from the Copthorne Hotel and the bottom of the steps exits into the carpark by a backpackers hostel.
