About Gothenburg Restaurant

Gothenburg’s story started on Hood Street in May 2009. Carl and Susanna had just moved to Hamilton after years of living and travelling in places like Sweden, Spain, Thailand, South America, England, Belgium and Canada. The dream of Gothenburg had grown from loving the international influences and personable service they had experienced in their travels, and a desire to bring that to Hamilton.

After 5 years of hard work at the original Hood Street location, where slowly but surely a network of loyal regular customers had built up, the opportunity to move Gothenburg to its new riverside location became reality.

Gothenburg is now thriving at its new home and we have an amazing team of devoted staff who together have become the Gothenburg Family.

We are proud to showcase the beauty of the mighty Waikato River in our backyard. A popular destination restaurant for locals and visitors to the Waikato Region.

3 people spend $380, ordered around 10 meals and some drinks. Very salty for most of food. Most of food are deep fried. First time eat dinner and drink 6 glass of water. Too salty. I can't taste much flavours of food, only taste satly. May be it is yummy for other people but definitely not my type. All my family don't like it, they think it is too salty.

Came here first time to try. From the outside you dont really see signs anywhere on the ANZ building that this place is here. Anyway we got here and was given an hour to eat since we had no booking which was plenty of time. Staff service was attentive and serving of food was quick. We had the crispy cauliflower, chicken kungpow and the market fish tapas. The cauliflower was excellent, fried nicely and pairs very well with the creamy dip sauce they have and the tumeric, also because its fried, it is actually quite filling. The kung pow chicken was definitely a bit of asian fusion mix here. I do prefer the original Kungpow chicken but this one wasn't bad. A lot of flavours so I wish they actually served with some rice as this dish normally pairs with that. The market fish was fried snapper. You get 4 medium pieces of snapper fillet which was cooked very nicely and goes well with the not so overpowering sauce. Only thing about this dish is $39 for 4 average pieces of fish which is quite expensive. However the other 2 dishes was more value and we were quite full at the end due to most of the dishes here are quite strong on flavour. Overall a solid 4.5/5

Had lunch at Gothernburg between our trip from Rotorua and Auckland. It was a pleasent surprise at the quality of the food. The most memorable dishes were Kang Pow chicken and deep fried cauliflower. Staff were very friendly too.

Totally disappointed!!!! This restaurant is no longer as good as it’s used to be!!! We ordered three dishes, lamb, steak and prawn, all dishes are extremely salty, we didn’t ask to redo it, and just told the waitress to kindly give our feedback to the chef, and she said β€œmaybe”, and refused to simply pass the feedback, terrible service at all! This time experience totally destroyed this high end class restaurant image in my mind, and will NOT recommend to anyone!

My favourite restaurant. The staff are warm and well served. The dishes are beautiful and delicious. Riverside restaurant. It's a good choice to take the riverside trail after dinner. Coffee dessert is also very good.

Lovely waitress, lovely food, they even fitted is in a little bit earlier than our booking. Food was delivered quicker than expected, which was great.kung pao chicken was so beautiful, I was blown away as I was not sure about the pickled veggies, but was my favourite! Lovely arancini, and cauliflower was crisp and delicious. Was abit skeptical, bit will definitely go back.

Blown away by how good gothenburg is. We went down from Auckland to visit the Hamilton Gardens and wanted somewhere to eat - Gothernburg seemed to have the best reviews and best looking food. We were not disappointed! Right from the get go the service was fantastic, attentive but not so frequent that you felt interrupted in your conversations. This carried through consistently the whole time. Drinks to start arrived quickly and the glass of wine was very generous. Onto the food - we started off with the salt and pepper squid with a chimichurri style sauce. Perfect. 10/10. The squid was very well cooked, crispy and not chewy, and the sauce was delicious. So good we kept it for the following dishes as there was some leftover! Next up we had the grilled focaccia with mozzarella- the focaccia was delicious, and the mozzarella with a sort of hummus/dip underneath was nice but needed salt. It had an olive salt sprinkled on it but not enough, and no salt and pepper on the tables. The dish would be better replacing the mozzarella with a burrata, it's a bit underwhelming as is but very good value and I was not unhappy with it. Following that we had the swedish prawns dish (Skagen rΓΆra,Β Swedish classic mix of prawn, dill, lemon and mayo, grilled ciabatta) which was our least favourite. It was OK, but needed salt and was a very generous portion - far too much for 2 people, it would be better shared between 4-6. Lastly we had the gnocchi which was another 10/10 highlight. The potato pillows were soft as anything and the medley of veggies it was served with were delightful, perfectly cooked, well seasoned, this was a fantastic way to finish. Overall I can't fault Gothernburg. Service, food, location, ambience all 5/5 and I couldnt believe how good value for money it was. Approx $150 for 4 dishes and 4 drinks. Only improvement I can suggest is to offer salt and pepper if it's not available on the tables, but a seriously minor minor thing, we could have asked for it if we were really bothered.

One of the few restaurants I’d gladly visit days in a row. The food incredible, and the service, par excellence. After 3 years stuck overseas, dining here again, yet only 2 nights in a row, was an absolute delight. Wish I was in Hamilton a day longer and Michelin visited New Zealand.
