★ ★ ★ ★ ★ This whole 1.5km x 1.3km area of forest is criss-crossed with multiple easy flat walking paths. It can be entered via many paths on the north, west or east (but not the south). There are multiple different sorts of trees, because it was an experimental forestry area in the 19th century to find out what sort of trees would grow well in New Zealand. It's vibrant green in spring, sunny and leafy in summer, and has gorgeous yellows and browns in autumn (as many trees are deciduous); it's barer in winter, but there are many evergreens too, and it's beautiful after the occasional snowfall.
