About Hawkes Bay Travel Centre & Freighter Travel (NZ)
Freighter Travel was established in 1993 by two enthusiastic world travellers who saw a wonderful travel opportunity going largely unnoticed by the travelling public for lack of a professional promotion and booking agency.
Pooling experience and resources, the two seasoned adventurers created a company that specializes in booking travel for anyone, from anywhere, to anywhere via cargo carrying, ocean going vessels.
They started a register of passenger carrying cargo ships which now lists almost every such vessel and shipping line in the world and is the only known register of its kind. This allows them to provide a unique and worldwide service.
Now, via the Internet, it is possible for you to enquire about and arrange the adventure of a lifetime.
Freighter Travel is a wholly owned subsidiary of Hawkes Bay Travel Centre, a fully licensed IATA Travel Agency.
The Owners
Hamish Jamieson has over 40 years experience in the tourism industry and has traveled extensively through every continent in the world. He was born in West Africa, and later traveled the continent from every direction. He lived, worked and traveled for several years in Europe, and has considerable experience traveling in the Middle East, India, Asia, the Far East, and North and South America.
As a P&O Lines and Princess Cruises purser he developed a love of the sea, and a desire to show everyone the joy of ocean travel.
Ask Hamish and he’ll tell you that at Freighter Travel they believe that the voyage is the adventure!
Hamish founded the very successful Hawkes Bay Travel Centre in 1989 and co-founded Freighter Travel with fellow travel fanatic Graeme Etheridge in 1993.
Graeme Etheridge has had a lifetime interest in shipping, and a marine engineering background that led to a number of voyages on passenger carrying cargo ships. Mixing with passengers who were obviously enjoying their close relationship with the day to day workings of a freighter led him to investigate ways of helping others to have the same experience. A meeting with Hamish Jamieson culminated in the formation of Freighter Travel.

β β β β β I was given the wrong dates for boarding despite having other information from the carrier. This was done either out of poor service or malice I am not sure which. Either way very unprofessional and I would not recommend Hamish or his company to anyone.

β β β β β was very happy with the service I got from Hamish. Though the boat was a few days late (there was a storm between australia and NZ), I was assured that we were still able to reach my final destination by the appointed time, and that WAS the case. He is very helpful in providing all the information required and can answer all your questions (especially since he does the cruises himself).
The boat journey was very nice, the first 2 days I felt a bit nauseous, but after that it passed, and the sea from NZ to USA for the rest of the journey was like glass. The food was good, most of the crew was good, the chief engineer even took me down one morning to the engine room. There was a big TV in one of the lounges with a hard drive attached with a collection of movies on it, as well as books to read, a table tennis table, a gym (if you want to call it that). You can go and hangout on the Bridge anytime (because there is always 2 crew up there). All in all I am very happy I went, and would certainly not pass up the opportunity to go again, however i would see if I could do a trip where you stop in another port before reaching your destination.

β β β β β I have completed three trips through Hamish and his travel office. All have involved Container ships and connected travel. I am an 'older female' who prefers to travel solo. At no time was there any problem with the bookings in fact one instance involved the need for me to return home earlier and bookings were sorted within 24 hours. I would have no hesitation in recommending Hamish to anyone in fact I have often done this.
Although it does not appear I have clicked on 5 Stars!
