★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Wow, what a dining experience! Looking at some of the reviews I think some people just don't get the Chef's sense of humour, he's hilarious! Yes he took photos, yes he grabbed a glass of wine from our bottle and sat down to chat with us. We didn't get upset with it?
It was my wife's birthday, arrived and there was a big happy birthday sign and banner in the restaurant. Two groups had cancelled on the poor guy but he remained open just for us. The food is pricier than some less ""niche" restaurants because it's fresh, organic and prepared on the spot. So what happens to all that food when clowns cancel at the last minute? Bloody rude, he should take a deposit but his humble Japanese ways won't allow him to do that. He trusts people.
The food was served like a degustation or tapas setting. Lots of beautifully prepared incredible small dishes that tasted incredible. Every dish was extraordinary Japanese cuisine prepared by a master of his craft. The soup was out of this world, as was the Wagu beef dish..oh, and the sashimi! The sake was wonderful too.
Masa is an incredible Chef and a fantastic, fascinating human being. If you haven't been to this place, you are missing out, but do take your sense of humour and don't be too damn precious as some sound in their whinge riddled 1 star reviews. His English isn't great, perhaps that's what others misinterpreted as arrogant or rude, that's certainly not the case. Highly recommended experience..and it's just that, an experience.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Absolutely amazing place to dine and very traditional, for better and for worse. Just show respect, show up on time and take a seat if available. This man is a master at his art, tastes like what I would expect from a Takumi and I would definitely say it's the best authentic Japanese food I've had a cross Auckland.
If you're already a fan of Japanese food, 101% would recommend!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ I've tried many kinds of ramen in Japan, even in Europe and Australia. But the taste of soup is the best among that I've tried in my life. Highly recommended to have it for sure !!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Super authentic Japanese flavour which takes me back to the time when I was home staying in Osaka! The flavour and atmosphere feels like you are eating at a Japanese friend’s house. Thank you for the wonderful food and memory.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Great spot for authentic Japanese food! The chef their is brilliant. It’s like eating at home culture, we went for lunch but the dinner option looks great. You have to book in advance for dinner, but he caters to your requirements. The atmosphere was amazing, I’d recommend to anyone who likes a home feel for a restaurant and enjoys talking to the chef while he prepares your meal.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ I have eaten at restaurants all over the world and consider myself an adventurous person willing to experience new culinary styles. I regularly eat at Japanese restaurants. I have never given a negative review before.
This was probably my worst dining experience in fifty years. Horrible food was accompanied by weird interactions with the ONE person who cooked and served the dishes. The dishes were barely discernible as Japanese and were presented with the finesse of slops at a prison kitchen.
When we complained in writing we were told that not everyone likes their style of food. This personified the arrogance and mediocrity we experienced that night.
This was once a highly regarded restaurant. What has gone wrong I don’t understand- but I will not go back. Embarrassingly bad.
