Our Chef

Muthuvelu Supramaniam, who also owns the business, is looking forward to sharing his passion for Malaysian cooking and reinventing special dishes for Wellingtonians.

He began having interest in cooking since young upon seeing his Amma's (mother's) excellent cooking skills. Growing up helping her cook mee goreng, and make roti canai and teh tarik for her little stall near their home, he decided to make cooking his profession.

He has more than 20 years of experience in cheffing, including 12 years in New Zealand working in established restaurants (Mango in Nelson, The Grill at Amora Hotel, Chow, Mojo and The Roxy) serving people to their hearts' content.

He is an expert in the production, preparation and presentation of his food. It has always been his desire to open his own restaurant and here we are! We are proud to serve good sumptuous food with healthy ingredients. The dishes are classic Malaysian food with a tinge of twist, giving you a taste of home, for sure.

Jom makan!

We are "On-licensed" and we serve a good selection of local wines and beers.

Came here for lunch a few days ago and ordered a Curry Laksa at $16. Nice flavours, but quite disappointing as there was very little egg noodles to be found in it. So still felt quite hungry afterwards! ? The othr noodle Fried Kwei Teow dish at $16 was yummy though. ? We received nice friendly service from our waitress. ?

Best Malaysian food in Wellington! My partner and I relocated to Wellington 2 years ago and were pleasantly surprised that there were no lack of malaysian restaurant options in the city- But discovery of Kanama Kopi Kadai is a whole new revelation, and a point of no return! When we crave our local malaysian fix, this is always the go to! Excellent hospitable hosts, with the chef cooking with his heart and soul, bringing the best of Malaysian flavours with a creative spin. We love every dish we tried and also enjoy the stories behind each creation. Authentic Malaysian flavours, smell, memories and connections- Kanama Kopi Kadai is all of that.

If you’re after a satisfying Malaysian meal, Kanama Kopi Kadai is a great option to try. I like that their menu is not overwhelmingly large but filled with enough classic choices to satisfy any palate. I went with the chicken rendang with saffron garlic roti and a side of the three cheese wontons. Generous portions meant I couldn’t finish it all and would be blessed with tasty leftovers tomorrow. The only recommendation - get rid of the cringey Giggle TV slideshow and let diners focus on the yummy food.

Unfortunately,we had quite a disappointing experience at this restaurant. First, we had to wait for nearly 40minutes to get our food ready! It would be great if they could let us know that they only had once chef to prepare the meals rather than having us to go to the counter to ask. So we’d be prepared. The rendang is served fusion style. I know it well because I am from the region. It should not be yogurt or cream on top of the meat like regular rendang is but they probably do it on purpose. The rendang was more to the dry side and it was quite upsetting to see that the description on the menu is different to what we were served. They put coconut yogurt instead of coconut cream. I had to ask and the guy did not even know what it was. First he said coconut cream, but when I said it tasted sour which I just wanted to make sure if it was still OK for us to eat it. Then he said it was yogurt. I looked at the menu again to check because my son is allergic to dairy. He went to the kitchen and said it was coconut yogurt. We would appreciate it if they let us know if they used coconut yogurt instead of coconut cream as it was written on the menu before they served the food. They did not even explain anything after my complaint. The nasi goreng was OK but could be fluffier. Only a couple of chicken pieces and did not see any shrimp in the rice. I hope they improved their communication and service, knowing that it was a Saturday night so must be busier than usual. I am not sure if I want to come back.

I simply love their food! So delicious, tasty, heartwarming, consistently great! The staff here are always kind and welcoming, happy to cater to dietary requirements (most things are GF and vegan by default). The ambience is casual but warm.

Kanama serves fantastic Malaysian food! The best in Welly. Take it from a Malaysian. Lovely hosts and service. Malaysian favourites like Nasi Lemak, Cha Koay Teow, Mamak Mee Goreng, Curry Laksa, and many dishes that you don't see in Welly, like Nasi Goreng Itik, Ayam Percik, gado gado, etc. Also some non-Malaysian dishes like Kaarage Chicken which is yum. Lots of vege and vegan dishes too. Malaysian refreshments include kopi and teh tarik along with Air Sirap Bandung.? Good prices, fantastic food, lovely people, authentic Malaysian.
