About King Tide Salt Fly

Way back in the day my Dad and his Dad would ply the waterways together, searching for the next willing fish to target. Either on the old launch or up a river in Taupo, fly rods in hand they made a formidable force. Their stories were passed down to my generation and will carry on, albeit with a few “adjustments”. The equipment may have changed hugely over this time but I still love opening the old big black tackle box and can’t help but wonder what other stories it holds.

I took great pleasure in whiling away the days fishing on the local wharf with my old man, there were knots to learn and fish to catch. It was a healthy outdoor Kiwi kids upbringing that I was fortunate to have been surrounded by. Eventually around my ninth Christmas I unwrapped a fly tying vise, this was met with looks of puzzlement. Shortly after reading the accompanying Hugh McDowells New Zealand Fly Tying book  I had bailed the household cat in the corner of the room and had my first materials.

Since then I have been fly fishing mad, the next pool and last cast mentality drilled into me on regular trips. These days more time has been spent chasing the many options of salt water species around the Bay of Plenty and surrounding areas. Head over to the blog page and keep up to play with my latest trips, reports and projects.

I attended Lucas' Salt Fly seminar on 17 October and found it to be very informative. Lucas has a huge amount of knowledge and was able to communicate this to the attendees in an interesting and engaging manner. I can recommend this seminar to others interested.

I had a great day fishing with Lucas on Tauranga Harbour and was thrilled to catch my first Kingfish. Lucas is very knowledgable, friendly, and professional, and his boat and gear are top-notch. I won't hesitate to recommend a day out with Kingtide to my friends.

My son and I booked a half day session with Lucas last week. We had a great day on the water and caught a few "ray riders". Targeting kings in less than a metre of water was a new experience and watching the eat at close range got our hearts racing. We learnt a lot from Lucas and enjoyed his company as he is easy going and amiable. I would happily recommend a day on the water guided by Lucas. Cheers Anthony Bickersteth

Lucas is a wonderful guide. Besides putting you onto fish, he improves your casting technique (kindly) and increases your knowledge of Kingfish behavior. You leave your days with Lucas a better fisherman and with an appreciation of the great fishery around Tauranga.

Had a great half-day with Lucas in January, fascinating to start to be able to spot the rays and learn about eagles (no kingfish) vs. sting rays (may have kingfish). The "harbour" is huge and beautiful and the boat (though unusual for an America Flats fisherman) is extremely well kitted out and worked perfectly for fly casting- surprisingly (for those of us used to being poled and needing quiet approaches), the kingfish do not care about the trolling motor. Can heartily recommend and would add that Lucas was very easy to deal with when booking a half day 3 months ahead from the other side of the world. Finally, Lucas is an enjoyable person to spend time with. Thanks Lucas - good luck.

Capt Lucas is a fantastic guide! Full of energy and enthusiasm for the amazing fishery he has on his door step and goes the extra mile for his clients. Highly recommend a trip out with Lucas and his well appointed and safe boat!

Fishing with Lucas in the beautiful Tauranga harbour was a world class experience my wife and I have now done twice and hope to do more. We had a variety of great experiences whether it was cruising the flats for kingfish, drifting over schools of snapper, casting at structure to tease something out, or anchored up for lunch in the calm of the turning tide. Lucas worked non-stop to put us onto fish, was quick to spot opportunities and always had a plan. Highly recommended to all.

Never been out with a guide before, and I quickly realized even if I fished the same spots at the same time, in the same boat using the same flies, I wouldn’t have caught a thing. Lucas was really fun to fish with, and knew the area extremely well. He did everything he could to bring me plenty of opportunities to catch fish and sure enough we were successful. Would highly recommend and will be keen to come back to beautiful Tauranga with Lucas to catch another king!
