β β β β β Beautiful peaceful lodge with access to the water and a 20 min drive to Whatipu Beach for awesome beach walks. Settlers Museum just down the road. Huia Store with great cafe 2 kms away. Could be so much improved by better mattresses all through. Choose to spend the second night in my car! Rating reflects this as sleep is so important to me!

β β β β β A quiet and peaceful escape close to the city. Excellent for small groups looking to get away for a few nights. Gets awarded my five stars for the lovely setting, and the sense of being away from it all.
Facilities are reasonably good, clean and well-maintained. Kitchen has no sharp knives, remember to bring your own.
The bunk bed mattresses are a bit tired, and not very comfy. Doubling up if you have spares is OK, but I recommend bring a small self-inflating mattress for a bit more comfort.
There is access down to the beach via a small bush-walk pathway on the northern end of the lawn.

β β β β β I had a great stay at Kiwanis. The best part was that all lodge rooms had a small heater in them so the rooms stayed warm. I cannot comment on the mattresses (other reviews have mentioned these) because I was fortunate to have a spare bed in my room so I "double-mattressed." The communal area by the kitchen was nice to hang out and the kitchen was well-stocked for my group. While there is no beach at the lodge, Whatipu beach is a 10 minute drive. The beach is great with a nice walk to a lookout point. Overall, I had a good time at Kiwanis Lodge.
