★ ★ ★ ★ ★ This little DOC campsite was an amazing place and a jewel in DOC's significantly large crown. We arrived and easily found a place to pitch our tent. We were very pleased with flushing toilets!
Take note that it can be busy if you arrive late in the day. You will also need to bring plenty of sunscreen and insect repellent. You cant swim on the beach as it is far too dangerous. But you can swim in the lagoon. One downside is there is a limit of staying 2 nights. This is also the start/end of the Heaphy track so some pleasure use is to park their cars.
Enjoy your stay, it's amazing! Park yourself on the beach and watch a beautiful sunset.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Probably the best campground we have ever stayed in. Sites are right on the beach, basic facilities with flushing toilets but no water. There is one and only one downside to this campground and that is the sandflies! They are relentless so make sure you take some big repellent

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Fab location but sandflies enjoy it too. Small ones fly straight through insect screens too.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ At the Southern end of the of
78-kilometre Heaphy Track, you can do some short day walks.
The Nīkau Walk is found near Karamea at the start of the Heaphy Track. 40 minute return walk.
Or walk to Scotts Beach ( 2 hours return)
Beyond the Nikau Grove Track, continue up and over the hill to see some magnificent views. Ferns and Rata spread out before you, opening onto a beautiful stretch of pure New Zealand coastal scenery.
At the beach is a pyramid shape rock
made of Karamea Granite which was formed about 375 million years ago, in the late Devonian period.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Typical well maintained and beautifully located DOC campsite. We weren’t doing the Heaphy track that starts here but we did manage a few great walks up into the hills. There are about ten sites for camper vans on the beach side and the sites are private and well drained. Toilets are flushing (not long drop) and there is a hut for cooking and cleaning. We really enjoyed our stay and will definitely be back here next time we visit the west coast.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Amazing spot! One of the best DOC sites in the country. Worth the trip up.
Loads of sandflies though. Being good repellent.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Beautiful wild camping at the end of the road north from Karamea and at the start of the Heaphy Track. This is one of those places I wish I could take home with me.
Flat, hard packed sandy sites with coastal vegetation giving some shelter from the prevailing westerlies. Lots of sites are right on the ocean so you have fantastic views and sunsets and the sound of the ocean to lull you to sleep at night.
Definitely no ocean swimming.
There are some good short walks close to the camp and best of all, the track over to Scott's Beach gives you a taste of the coastal section of the Heaphy Track. It's easy walking and a good bike ride.
Make sure you have insect repellant. The West Coast is very popular with sandflies, particularly if rain is on the way.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Lovely remote Campsite with easy access as road in is now sealed. Access to heaphy track and nearby walks (no dogs). Dogs allowed in the camp. Doc have been coming daily to clean the toilets and check facilities. Nice swimming in the river, although beach too dangerous to swim in.
