★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Free geothermal experience in the heart of Rotorua! This area is a big geothermal hotspot and aside from the big thermal lake there are boiling mud pools, boiling streams and the Maori legend of how the lake (and the park) got it's name. There is a walkway that goes all round the lake with various viewing points, some that go out over the lake itself. There's even a carving of Manaia on one side.
This place may not have the uniqueness of Waiotapu or a geyser like Te Puia, etc but for those on a budget this will give you a pretty good taste of geothermal rotorua without putting a dent in your pocket.
