Strangest thing I've ever seen, but it works, whatever working means I guess.

Interesting dynamic sculpture. Working infrequently though so you may miss it in its full glory.

Very disappointing that this waterfront feature is not working. Yes, some idiot swung on it and broke it. But it wasntfunctionsl before that.

Water Whirler supposedly plays in 10 minute cycles, on the hour at 10am, 11am, 12pm, 1pm and 3pm; and again hourly from 6pm – 10pm. It only operates in winds of less than 35km per hour so most days it doesn't play.

This pricey, dynamic sculpture by kinetic sculptor Len Lye is unique in Wellington and sprays jets of water along its length as it dances (a complex routine because it oscillates, revolves and gyrates at the same time) at two-hourly intervals from 8am to 10pm for 4 days a week, from Monday to Thursday. From Friday to Sunday inclusive, it turns on at two-hourly intervals from 8am to noon, then from 1pm onwards at one hourly intervals until 10pm. However you may not see this display often because it only works when winds are less than 20 knots. And when it does the jets are turned on for only 10 minutes. Touted as giving a "dazzling display" the WW may not live up to your expectations especially when the thin pole is viewed against the bright horizon during the day. But when viewed at night (or the night shots) when WW is in full swing, the feathery plumes of misty sprays perform a beautiful choreography that is quite spectacular! (Btw do not tamper with the WW as it has delicate, complex machinery and is very expensive to repair. Vandals will have to fork out a huge fine if it gets damaged again. Look and enjoy but don't touch!)
