About Little India
Our History
Sukhi and Joanna Gill began with a small dairy, and adjoining fish and chip shop, in Ravensbourne just outside Dunedin.
When Sukhi’s mother and father visited from India, Sukhi decided to add a few Indian dishes to the fish and chip shop’s menu. Soon there were lines of people down the street wanting to enjoy the new Indian dishes. With a single electric stove struggling to keep up with demand, Joanna (a chef) and Sukhi (an accountant) decided to open a New Zealand Indian restaurant.
After training in a family friend’s restaurant in Australia, Sukhi returned and opened the first Little India restaurant in 1991.
Little India is a family business. Founded by Sukhi Gill in Dunedin in 1991, the family restaurant has grown from humble beginnings to a nationwide business, with over 11 Little India restaurants throughout New Zealand.

β β β β β One of the most awful restaurant experiences ever - a meal ordered takes about 45 mins to arrive and anything over and above the initial order would take 30 minutes each... so in order to eat a whole meal you need at least 3 hours to spare unless you can gauge your hunger exactly from the start and know the exact quantity of naan or curry to order. What is even worse is the quantity and taste - from chilli paneer to malai kofta to dal makhani - they all taste the same and the quantity is fit just for one person... With so many competitors in the market, it is only time that they should up their game or be ready to lose on the market share.. it was extremely disappointing.

β β β β β Little india has always been my favorite Indian restaurant for well over 14 years they even looked after my wife and I at their Christchurch branch when we were on our hunnymoon down there as one of their cooks recognized us from the hamilton branch. Very lovely food and also very friendly aswell I would not hesitate recommending others to dine there. Cheers Goldie

β β β β β Longtime customer not returning! The quality of the service here has been deteriorating. Food is never delivered on time. In one case it was delivered an hour early. Today it was 30 mins late, it was cold, my butter chicken had only 3 pieces of chicken and we received only 1 naan bread instead of two. Luckily there are plenty of other options for Indian food now. I wonβt be ordering from here again.
