★ ★ ★ ★ ★ One of the most awkward experiences I've had in 5 years of living in NZ. A full spectrum "Apartheid" style policy within the place where the seul fact of being from europe puts you on the "fast lane" when it comes to work even if you've never grabbed a hammer or even have a proper visa. However if you are white and fussy and you don't mind be given privileges, apartheid lodge IS the place you'd rather be.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Promise of work in exchange for custom, however that work is then shared out between the residents. Residents are drip fed work in order to keep them there as paying customers. Rents are kept in a little black book, I would keep your receipts as the owner doesn't like customers to leave and will say they haven't paid for a week sometime ago. I bet the tax man would be interested in that book just to compare cash payments to the declared business turnover and tax payments to the government. Named by the residents as the "waste-away lodge", a truly filthy establishment with poor facilities.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Very friendly and the cheapest backpacker hostel you can stay near Kerikeri. The owner, Brian, is an awesome guy who really put's in the effort to get you jobs. Those variate in all kind of fields (vineyard work, planting plants, cleaning gardens, bee farm, ...)
There is space for like 15 campervans. Idk how the rooms look since i stayed in a van.
There are 2 kitchens you share with other backpackers. There is no kitchen supply.
I feel reviews for backpacker hostels depend on the people you meet. Gladly I met awesome people and if you decide to stay here, I wish you that you have the luck aswell.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ I spent 3 months here back in 2007, it was a god Send for me after traveling for 8 months and money was now short. Brian promised me work if I came up from Auckland. I met some great people here. I would recommend.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Great spot. Owner was very helpful when we needed it otherwise we were left alone to relax and enjoy. Thanks Brian for allowing us to have our dogs with us. We would definitely recommend hideaway lodge to anyone.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Nice enough place, had an unfortunate incident with a long term resident there who thankfully left soon after and Brian was very understanding and helpful with anything that went wrong. As a solo woman I would not stay there again on my own but would stay with a group of friends and some of the long term residents made you feel a bit uncomfortable sometimes. Got work very quickly though and my room was very nice.
