Love coming here... I travel from the other side of Auckland just so I can see my favourite hairdresser Ally ❀. Reasonably priced, comfortable, great banter, amazing head massages well worth the drive.

I had been to Maelstrom once before and had an amazing experience so I rebooked. When I got to my second appointment, I was serviced by a different hairdresser than the first time, but didn't question it as I trusted them. I had a horrific experience. I wanted the exact same services I had got last time. I had a very fine moneypiece, a slightly lighter brown than the rest of my hair, and just wanted to refresh the rest of my colour, and trim the ends. The haircut I received was terrible. She reassured me that we would just take off the bare minimum as I am working on restoring the health of my hair and growing it long. My hair was hacked at. She gave me layers that I DID NOT ask for, and they were SO CHUNKY and blocky. My hair was all different lengths all over. The layers at the top and at the back were just these short square chunks. One side was longer than the other too, very noticeably so. My hair is curly, so it became a horrible puffy mess. It wasn't so bad when I left and it was all styled, but the second the curls dropped you could see how bad it was. It had me in tears several times. I was so upset with it- going shorter than you expected is one thing, but different lengths all over is another. When I tied it back big square chunks fell out. The moneypiece ended up being blonde, which I didn't ask for, and after one wash was yellow. Again, this was also not even on both sides. I needed to fix it straight away so went somewhere else (I didn't want to go back and risk seeing the same stylist)- I had to have the whole thing cut much shorter as it was the only way to get rid of the badly done layers. The hairdresser that fixed it was horrified, she showed me the back and it was almost a MULLET. It's going to take a lot of haircuts to get rid of the layers while they grow out and we shorten the longer ones, and won't be able to grow my hair longer any time soon- there goes my hopes of having longer hair for my wedding next year. I emailed Maelstrom about this, and was very polite. I didn't receive a reply, so emailed again. They replied a few days later saying "we will get back to you tomorrow morning". That was over a week ago, and no reply. I followed up again, and a few days later, still nothing. Even an apology would have been nice. The horrendous haircut that had me in tears for days is one thing, but not following up on a complaint is another. I was left with no choice but to write this review since they don't seem to care. It was so disappointing to be left so upset with the way I looked, and then have such terrible customer service when giving them the chance to make it right.

Someone called me to book me for the appointment for smoothing package. I wasn't sure but the lady over the phone told me that I can rebook or reschedule anytime without reasons. I requested for reminders and lady assured me that I will get reminders a day before. I didn't get reminder for the booking and I missed it. Now they have taken my 50 saying that I have to pay $50 to reschedule. Please feel rich by keeping my $50 for no service. They are new to business and completely unprofessional. I hope someone can listen to the phone call I received for making the first booking. I would request all to please be aware before you make any payments for the booking.

I am extremely VERY VERY DISAPPOINTED ,at the result of the hair colour foil service completed at Maelstrom Hairdressing salon on Tuesday 1/2/22 During my discussion with the owner who resides in Australia, I have clearly expressed my desire that I wanted a full hair of foils to break my natural growth Furthermore i was assured by the owner over the phone that my hair colour will not resemble with orange hair on head. On my visit to the salon ,I met ......who the owner highly recommended as the expert hair dresser, Unfortunately during my encounter ,I over heard her speaking to the other hair dresser and expressing her frustration about how owner could promise we could deliver this service to the customer . My hair ended up looking like a popstar from 2002 ,just after the first wash , I have been getting blond from past so many years but never had such a bad experience, the toner used came off the next day ,hair dresser also used hair brush on my wet hair which caused a lot of breakage ,it felt like my hair was falling apart as she was very rough on my hair , Its very disappointing to see how badly my hair has been damaged . The worst experience ever .

I received a hair smoothing treatment from Elly. She was lovely. It was a wonderful experience and my hair has never looked better. I fell asleep because it was so relaxing. It doesn't smell as much as keratin straightening and I walked out of the salon with clean, dry, silky hair. Thank you Elly, I'll be back in 3-6 months!!

I will be honest, my first experience here last week was not the best. Friendly staff and they were very polite, however the service felt very rushed and not a great deal of care was taken. I had a different stylist than who I was supposed to be booked with. When it came to global colour, it felt very rushed and there was dye on my forehead, ears and back of my neck. The stylist said he would wash it off but it had sat there for 50 minutes already that I could see it had stained. The dye was not washed out properly at the back of my head/ neck area that it became dry and scabby the next day. I also washed out more colour when I washed my hair next. I had asked for layers when it came to my haircut, but I could tell this was rushed as they were due to close within the next 20 minutes. I received a dry trim and some long layers at the bottom, however not what I had asked for or shown the stylist. I did remind him a few times about adding in more layers starting further up and he acknowledged me but I still did not receive this. For $245 I would have really expected more care and consideration that I have received elsewhere.
