β β β β β βThe magic was Ho-Humβ
What I liked:
Peering in through the window, all I could see were asian people dining. The restaurant looked spacious, warm and clean. It had diners but didn't look too busy.
What I didn't like:
Once seated, looking up at the ceiling - a forest of plastic plants. Decades of dining has taught me to be wary of restaurants with plastic plants and this place almost had as much per square meter as the Amazon Jungle. Oh oh!
The menu was extensive along with blackboard specials and a further laminated card with specials. Too much really. Why do Chinese restaurants do this?
The food came out disjointed, bits of our order appearing in-between lengthy gaps mean't one diner sat twiddling thumbs on his mobile phone while the other 2 diners were eating. In the end we had to prompt the counter for the dish.
My rice congee dish came out so scorching hot, I had to let it sit there for 30minutes to cool down. A mention to the Boss Man as he walked past, didnt help. He said some people like their congee really hot. Oh yeah sure, then off to hospital for 2nd degree burns in their mouth. So that's as far as that 'complaint; got with Boss Man. In the end, the cooling down wait wasn't worth it, the congee was watery and lacked flavour.
The rest of the dishes we ordered were just average. You know, okay to eat, no complaints but that maybe you could make it better at home sort of thought.
End of meal, go to settle account and Boss Man is ready to receive. No 'how was everything' service, more like let me add this bill up service. Then I notice a little sticky taped note on the till "credit card minimum $20 and 3% surcharge" Dang another 3%. So I pull out cash to settle. I am sure I noticed Boss Mans eye twinkle as he presses the No Sale button on the till and stuffs my hard earned belonging into the draw.
Dang maybe I should have charged Boss Man a 15% surcharge discount for the GST content.
The magic was a trick, the plants are for real, and there are heaps of restaurants to choose from next time.

β β β β β I had a vegetable stir fry called healthy stir and it was delicious. The lemon chicken I had with it was very good too. The restaurant doesn't rely on excessive salt for flavour. My new favourite restaurant.

β β β β β Was here a while ago when visiting Wellington. We were just looking for some simple Asian food for lunch and we came across this Asian restaurant and takeaway. It was typically a Chinese type of restaurant. Don't expect much of the place but it was pleasant and spacious. The service was as expected but friendly. Surprisingly the food was quite tasty. So if you would like to have a simple Chinese lunch with reasonable price, this place is definitely recommended.

β β β β β Supposedly good Cantonese cuisine so I went for the Cantonese Style Fried Noodles in egg gravy (wat dan hor). It looks pretty legit, taste wise its almost there (but I have high expectations) but the meat were absolutely tender and amazing. Although I've only visited once I'm pretty sure the other dishes were good too based on the looks and the demographics of the customers. Will definitely be back when I'm in Wellington.

β β β β β @magic_kitchen_welly is just TOO good! Gotta keep introducing it to all my friends who havenβt experienced it yet!
Clay pot rice - one of their best dishes! Since I couldnβt decide which flavours to get, the super nice owner let me have 3 flavours, with just a tiny bit of extra cost! Great customers service right there! He always manage to cater for my personalised requests! PS Just make sure you mix that pot quick and donβt take too long to take your foodie photo! Or else, like our experience tonight, we left the pretty looking clay pot rice for too long, and the rice continued to cook and turned a bit crunchy whoops! ? So, mix it up as soon as you get it on your table!
Next we had the deep fried soft shell crab. It was only $16 for 4 pieces, not bad. But Iβd say it was average, keen to move on to try different dishes next time.
Most favourite dish of all that Iβd introduce to EVERYONE was the Jade tofu dish with fish and shrimp paste! My oh my! Always so delicious, top quality! Even my 1.5 year old friend loved it so much that she gobbled up A LOT of tofu and still wanted more, impressive!
Still going to rate this place 5/5! Best customers service, delicious comfort Cantonese food, and always cater to special requests!

β β β β β This is my third time to Magic!!! This is my favourite Canton restaurant in Welly. Their dishes are just like "HOME-FLAVOUR". We, 3people order 4 dishes, but only took a photo of one dish....we forget and eat directly. :P
1. Shrimp dumplings. Surprisingly good! Thin skin with lots of shrimps stuffed.
2. Beef brisket with turnip - so yummy, especially cook in a clay pot! Keeps the dish so hot for a while!
3. Jade Tofu. Crispy skin with soft tofu!!! My friend's favourite dish!
4. Clay pot cured meat & Chinese sausage with Glutinous rice! OMG!!! This is so AMAZING!!! I am so satisfied and I have half pot of it! Must pick item!

β β β β β Excellent food, full of flavour. An enjoyable eating experience. Definitely recommend the standard dishes, or try out the more authentic dishes not listed on the main menu.
