Marshall Laing Primary School - Mount Roskill
About Marshall Laing Primary School
What e learning at all levels of our school looks like
E learning [electronic device supported learning] at Marshall Laing occurs in all parts of the school. The new entrant children and year one children use ‘pods’ containing six ipads to support their learning. These pods are shared among the junior classrooms and the teachers use these to provide students with online games and activities directly aligned to their learning.
In year two, children continue to use pods of ipads and, in addition, teachers undertake to expose them to chromebooks and laptops – where traditional keyboard use, web browsing and shared documents are focused upon.
In year three and four all students are involved in e learning with two thirds of our classes being 1:1 device classrooms. This means each child in a 1:1 classroom brings their own device so that they can work independently. The remaining year three and four classrooms undertake e learning using pods of chromebooks, typically each class only has one pod available to them at any given time.
Year five and six classes have five out of six classes as 1:1 device classes. The remaining year five and six class uses chromebook pods, usually having one available to them, to support the e learning component of their programs.
Why MLPS favours a BYOD policy
Our school uses a BYOD [Bring Your Own Device] model for our e learning programme. This allows us to provide more coverage for our students than we would otherwise be able, as well as to utilise devices families already possess. We have found that chromebooks and laptops are by far the most useful device in a New Zealand classroom environment.
Why MLPS are proponents of e learning
Our e learning policy is based upon the understanding that we are contemporising our students’ learning experiences with technology used in the workplace and home. We also appreciate that we are a link in an educational continuum and as our children move forward to intermediate school, college, university or the workplace there will be an increasing exposure to technology and a need for them to understand how to use it for more than just gaming.
What MLPS offers
E learning at Marshall Laing Primary School involves digital technology as tools. These tools do not replace good teaching and effective learning, but enhance them. Marshall Laing learners are offered the opportunity to embrace contemporary technology to experience learning that offers vast opportunities to personally research and inquire, to become self motivated and responsible learners and to take up the challenge to move their learning at an increased pace, at varied times and at locations they would never previously have considered. E learning offers parents the opportunity to be involved as active participants in their child’s learning as never before possible. The e learning programme at Marshall Laing Primary School aspires to create a community of learners able to look outward and to share their successes in multiple contexts.

β β β β β The school is adequate, the standard of learning isn't exceedingly high but has a great environment for all students.

β β β β β This school is great! They recently got some new bikes for the students to ride on. Theres also a bike trial for the students. There's also a turf soccer field. I went in for a tour and learnt about the school.
Every Fridays the students go in for assembly where a class presents something. It starts with the New Zealand national anthem. There's also a music school in the school. This is one of the best schools in Auckland.

β β β β β I can't really say what the school is like now as it has been 7 years since I last attended it, but I can definitely say that I have good memories of this school.
The teachers here cared about their students and encouraged them to try their hardest. They helped you when you needed help, and most of all they encouraged you to be creative.
Academically, this school prepared me well for intermediate school, (though I should warn that that the academic gap between intermediate school and college is slightly larger).
One thing I would have liked is for there to have been more extracurricular activities (not just sport teams) for students. But then again with this school being a primary school there are limitations.
I have no regrets choosing to go to this school (yes, it was my choice), and I am grateful for having such a warm and memorable time here in Marshall Laing.
