- males have a 2 in 5 chance of suffering a critical illness between age 30 and 64(1)

Cancer- in 2010 there were 21,235 new cancer registrations in New Zealand. A fairly even split, with 52.1% of those being male. For men prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in New Zealand, with about 3000 being diagnosed every year. It accounted for 27% of all new registrations. When it comes to women, 2800 are diagnosed every year with breast cancer. It accounted for 27.5% of all new registrations. About 75% of those diagnosed would be older than 50. (What's important to note is 85% of women diagnosed with breast cancer live 5 years or longer.) You may be surprised to know that 20 men are diagnosed every year with breast cancer(3).
Stroke- 24 New Zealanders every day have a stroke. 25% would be younger than 65. (That also includes 40 children each year suffering a stroke.) Stroke is regarded as the major cause of adult disability in New Zealand. There are about 60,000 stroke survivors in New Zealand. Many are disabled and need significant daily support (4).
Motor neurone disease- smaller but quite deadly. About 300 people would suffer from this in New Zealand at any one time. Around 100 people are diagnosed each year, and 100 die each year (5).
What does this mean to you?
