Since then Nada Bakery has established itself as one of New Zealand's foremost bakeries being crowned Baker of the Year three times and runner-up several more and regularly wins accolades for its pies and other products. Bakers from around the world visit us and we visit them learning from each other and bringing international flavours to our Wellington bakery and cafe.
At the age of 16, Peter Gray started work in a small village bakery and decided he wanted to start his own business before he was 21. From there, via an apprenticeship at Monette Cakes in Porirua, and time abroad Peter fulfilled his dream of opening his own bakery and Nada Bakery was founded in 1975 in Haitaitai. By the 1980s there were eight retail stores across Wellington before 1982 saw a centralisation to the Johnsonville store - when we were the only food outlet in Johnsonville.
Since then Nada Bakery has established itself as one of New Zealand's foremost bakeries being crowned Baker of the Year three times and runner-up several more and regularly wins accolades for its pies and other products. Bakers from around the world visit us and we visit them learning from each other and bringing international flavours to our Wellington bakery and cafe.Nada Bakery has always been a family business with Peter's wife Judith heavily involved and their three children including son Michael began baking at a young age. So when Peter sadly passed away in 2005 it made perfect sense for Judith and Michael to take over the business. In 2010, they expanded to Tawa opening a new bakery and cafe where customers could dine in on the amazing baked goods and great coffee and, in 2017, opened The Bakery Basket an online branch with delivery across New Zealand.
We are lucky to be supported by a long serving great team of staff from the many young people who pass through our business to our long-serving staff members some of whom have been with us for more than 20 years.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Brought a steak and cheese which I paid $6.90 for and it had to be one of the worse pies I’ve ever tasted for that price plus the pie wasn’t even that big.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ I don't often leave reviews, but I had such great service from a young lady named Becca at Nada Johnsonville yesterday (13/03/21) that i felt it needed to be shared. She was great with the much younger staff while still being focused on giving exceptional customer service. Friendly, focused and patient in a very busy store. Well done Becca, you are an asset to the store and that kind of customer service will keep me coming back.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Well I don't know why some people have rated low but this bakey is definitely the best I've been to so far. Pies are out of this world, fresh and juicy. Sweet line doesn't disappoint you as well. Staff is really helpful even when you rush in just before they close doors. Pies tend to sell out quickly, so if you want some better het there in the morning.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Worst customer service ever. I was rudely asked to leave for bringing a shopping trolley with my groceries into the bakery. Could have asked politely if I can please leave my trolley outside, but even that's just ridiculous. I walked out and didn't come back. I'll buy a pie somewhere else.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Nada has won many bakery awards in the region over many years. Even better they have adapted their business to continue business during COVID-2019 and still provide there award winning meat pies. Todays meat pies and cakes were excellent.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Wow! I got a croissant, ham and salad sandwich and a custard doughnut this morning... and Oh my, SO DELICIOUS. ALL OF IT.
I'm French, so I'm so difficult with croissant, but this one was perfect! Crispy outside, soft inside. So tasy.
The sandwich is made with such a good bread, and fresh ingredients in it.
And the doughnut has a very good amount of custard in it.
Best bakery breakfast !
Highly recommend it.
