Numerous shipwrecks have been recorded here. With no natural port on the West Coast of NZ, unpredictable and treacherous harbour bars are the mariner’s dread.
Greymouth has the most ship wrecks than any other place in New Zealand.
The Greymouth River bar is notoriously dangerous for ships. Entering the river ports on the West Coast has always been risky for ships.
A bar is a shallow area of sand or mud, usually deposited near the mouth of a bay or river. The seas along a bar often are much larger and steeper than the ocean swell and wind waves outside the bar.
The Grey River bar is one of the most dangerous on the coast. There are no laws, but the Port of Greymouth advises that if a blue light at the breakwater is flashing, conditions are dangerous and only the most skilled skippers should consider crossing.
