I had the similar experience with the other guy who rated earlier, we came for a little look around(never been to the maori village before) but we didnt get welcomed by the lady.. she came out from the nearby house immidiatly after we parked and ask us to move the car and dont go over the drive way because its private (but im still not sure was it private because there was no sign) However the little spot was beautiful and I’m definately coming back for another look ;)

From the outside it looks like a lovely Maori-style church, but we didn't hang around long enough to find out. One of our party made the (apparent) mistake of walking up the driveway of the Marae across the road and a 'lady' rushed out of a nearby house, barking at them to GET OUT! GET OUT OF THERE! like they were about to rob the place. Wonder if she does the same to the postman? Pull your neck in! It might be worth investing in a sign saying: "Private Property", or "Trespassers will be shot" (which was more the feeling we got). It would save the effort, embarrassment and earache all round. The church itself seemed nice as far as we could tell, just don't look over the road at the Marae - you have been warned.

Nice wee church located on the premises of the Onuku Marae. The church, built in 1880 ceased to have have weekly services in 1966 due to dwindling numbers. However, it continues to have baptisms, weddings and funerals. It has a nice and cozy atmosphere. Do pop in for a visit when you are in the neighborhood.
