★ ★ ★ ★ ★ We wished to visit Akaroa because of the marae, but time limited us. Fortunately our flight was delayed from Christchurch, but now it's actually an unfortunate turn.
We found the time to make the day trip there, and wanted to visit this historical and cultural site.
We weren't loud, didn't cross an fences, or boundary.
My husband is Hawaiian, so complete respect of culture.
Locals ended up screaming at us to "get out" , "leave", "can you speak English"
I only leave the poor review as I emailed the marae shortly after to ask what we could have done better to be more respectful. That was more than a month and nothing back.
Truly left a disappointing view on NZ, as he experienced these kinds of aggressive behaviours across NZ from all the locals.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Ōnuku marae is located a few hundred metres from the sea on a grassy rise. The view across the bay is post-card perfect from the wharekai/dining hall deck. The whare tipuna/ancestral house is an amazingly beautiful combination of contemporary and traditional artforms honouring the memory of significant iwi/tribal members spanning the entire history of this proud tribe. Peaceful, quiet, welcoming, safe both spiritually and physically. A truly unforgettable experience. An absolute privilege to be welcomed with warmth onto Ōnuku.
