★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Doesn't look much now but this place was where the Battle of Ōrākau happened that inspired the 1925 movie "Rewi's Last Stand".
The battle also led to the creation of the King Country where Maori retreated into the hinterland, away from the British imperial and colonial troops.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ If there were no signs you would never know this was there as the highway goes right thru it. It is a significant battle site, but it's just unfortunate the other half of the site is on the other side of the highway which is inaccessible
