β β β β β This well developed walkway features trails, paved pathways, raised wooden walkways and bridges, and a few stairways.
It is great for walking and running, and is popular with locals for dog walking and exercise.
It takes a total of about 40 to 45 minutes to walk completely around the basin, and there are plenty of benches to sit and relax on along the way.
There are also several boat ramps with parking, and one free parking area.
The Basin walkway can be accessed from many points, and is never closed.
There is a shopping center on the northwest side, on Orekai Road, with an organic grocery store, restaurants, and cafes, including a few that serve drinks or beers.
A great place to spend a few hours for a relaxing walk!

β β β β β Great walk very close to Auckland City centre. The newly constructed waterfront walk is amazing

β β β β β A pleasant walk around the basin. Some steepish steps but shaded, thank goodness. If you are going on a sunny summer day make sure you are wearing shoes as the track which runs parallel to the railway line becomes extremely hot. Also be aware your dog might find it a little warm on their paws!

β β β β β Ive been walking this route since forever. Actually only 13 years, but in that time I've seen a lot of change. The only regret I have is that eye sore of an apartment complex right on the pathway towards Meadowbank and Lucerne Rds. Other than that the water is looking good and the natural surrounds just fabulous.

β β β β β I've driven past the basin so many time and finally managed to actually walk around it. There are many ways onto the basin walkway and most are well signposted. The only ones which are harder to find are the ones on Lucerne Road. It is also connected to the Meadowbank and Orakei train stations so quite easy to reach it from there. The walk itself was fairly easy. I really enjoyed walking on the bridge along the water parallel to the train tracks. There was also another bridge which is close to a tree with birds on them. The area has on-leash and off-leash areas along the track so there were quite a few people walking their dogs there. There were quite a few benches around the track so lots of places to just sit and absorb the views. It looks like it is mainly used for watersports like water skiing. There is a mixture of trails from tracks to gravel paths which made it interesting to walk. There were a few points which required walking on the road. There is also a small uphill area between Upland road and Orakei Road which has building remnants on it as well as a really beautiful view of the basin. It is quite a nice short walk and you go past the Orakei Bay Village which has lots of food and drink options.
