Lake Manapouri's only Public Boat Ramp and Berthing area. The name was given to the harbour soon after the Japanese attack of Pearl Harbor in Hawaii in 1941. Pearl Harbour is used mainly by ferry and water taxi operators transporting Meridian Energy staff 35 kilometres (22 mi) across Lake Manapouri to the Manapouri Hydroelectric Power Station, on the West Arm of the lake. Ferries also carry tourists travelling to the power station and onwards to Doubtful Sound, located on the coast 10 km beyond the West Arm. It also provides easy access to Lake Manapouri for recreational boat users. The Tramping track on the opposite Bank takes you on a pleasant, half-day walk through beech forest near Manapouri, to a hill viewpoint overlooking the lake called the Circle track and also the start of the Hope Arm, Back Valley, Garnock Burn Walk. The Harbour itself has a 5 Knot speed limit for all boats. The boat ramp - although functional, is pretty inadequate given the amount of boats and the size of the lake. Needs to be considerable bigger and/or an alternate boat ramp placed somewhere else in the Vicinity. Or better still - Meridian could open up the supply bay ramp given the minimal amount of use that gets. (Gee! That would be a good idea).
