About Petone Settlers Museum

Located on the shores of Wellington harbour, the Petone Settlers Museum Te Whare Whakaaro occupies one of New Zealand’s most significant memorial buildings, the Wellington Provincial Centennial Memorial.

It officially opened on 22 January 1940 and, also serving as a bathing pavilion, it became the heart of Petone’s thriving beach scene.

The building hosts our museum where we collect, care for and share our social history. You can learn about Honiana Te Puni-kokopu and Te Wharepouri - significant ariki (leaders) from the 1800s. Experience the stories of the early European settlers, and learn about some of our local people and communities.

You can also explore the impacts of industrialisation, and the increasing pace of cultural change with stories about local factories, Bodgies and Widgies and local entrepreneurs.

What a neat little surprise! We were wondering along the sea front and decided to step inside to see what this museum was about... this became our highlight of a trip to Petone for the day! A wonderfully knowledgeable and friendly host, interesting tidbits of info throughout the exhibition and well put together displays. Highly recommended if you are nearby.

Although, it looks small from the outside, there are lots of nice exhibits inside. The staff was very cheerful and helpful. I specially enjoyed the 25 mins video about the history of New Zealand. Highly recommended. It will take you less than an a hour. It is worth it.

Cool place to learn more about the history and story of Petone. Learned so much from this place and now going for a drive around Petone, we were able to point out different places, which were so rich of history and culture. How blessed we are to have such a museum that's able to showcase this beautiful history.
