★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Walk thru beautiful bush to stunning beach and estuary back along beach to start. Like a good loop walk about 30 minutes.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Beautiful track at any time of day but seen at it's very best very early in the morning. Park here, walk 20 minutes down the track out to Picnic Point through the podocarp forest while the many native birds that roost here are singing in "The Dawn Chorus" (they later disperse to feed).
Note: you will get to an intersection marked "King's Rock track", King's Rock was totally destroyed by coastal storms a few years ago so don't bother following that track, it is muddy and goes nowhere...
You will arrive down at the beach at the track end perfectly in time to watch the usually spectacular sunrise.
If you have a dog with you please keep it on a leash, there are little blue Penguins and even the occasional yellow eyed or even Fiordland crested penguin hidden in the bush and grass along the beach. You can't see them but your dog can easily find them and kill them without you even knowing!
Either return to your car via the track or walk back along the sandy beach for about 15 minutes till you see the houses of Papatowai Village, where the little stream crosses the beach, follow the muddy vehicle track off the beach and walk up the gravel road toward the west for a few minutes to find yourself back at your car.
If it is low tide, instead of leaving the beach you can walk up the side of the estuary all the way to the Papatowai bridge (visible from the beach) then walk up the main road back into Papatowai and turn left into Alexander St to get back to your parked car. Round trip of approximately an hour and a half if you go as slow as me!
