★ ★ ★ ★ ★ A very fascinating collection of early nz history. And the early military presence protected the area around the waikato.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Came across this site quite by chance. A few moments was all it took to look at the site a short walk away from the Sunday market. The visitor center was closed but have since found out it is open only on Sundays between 10am and 1pm. A little know part of NZ's history.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Helpful and informative staff/volunteer on site. No entry charge but donations are welcome. Visiting a place that is very much part of NZ history helps make history come to life. Currently only static displays and visual information but I understand that interactive displays will be added in the future so worth going back and revisiting. Current displays are professional and informative. It would be good to have info on the Pokeno Old Soldiers Memorial incorporated somewhere particularly as it fits the era in focus and is close by.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Dedicated to this large redoubt and other smaller ones like it. Month by month account of the Maori wars which they keep calling the New Zealand wars although a booklet they have there calls them the Waikato wars.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ This site in Pōkeno had a crucial role in the New Zealand Wars as the staging point for the invasion of the Waikato. The education centre, only open on Sundays from 10am to 2pm, has excellent interpretative displays that puts Queen’s Redoubt in its broader context of the Treaty of Waitangi; the wider New Zealand Wars and Māori/ Pākehā relations. Absolutely worth visiting.
