★ ★ ★ ★ ★ I've tried to map Ruapuke Beach a few times but Google won't accept it; so I'll put a review of it in this parking lot segment. This beach is beautiful and well worth visiting. Its most unique feature is its black sand, which sparkles in the sun as though littered with diamonds. We've been to black sand beaches before but have never seen anything like this.
Tip: It's easy to combine a visit to this beach with other sights. You can start with Bridal Veil Falls, then take an unsealed loop road (Ruapuke Road which later turns into Whaanga) to Ruapuke Beach. Continue from there to the Te Toto Gorge Lookout, the surf breaks at Whale (a short detour) and Manu Bays, and Ngarunui Beach. It's a winding road but a beautiful drive, and if you end your day at the Raglan Wharf then you'll really have seen the area!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ A wild coastline with spectacular black sand. Not a place I would want to swim but a great place to watch West Coast surf.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Rough road to get there and the actual parking lot is also rough. Park where you can. But if you like wild places or are an avid surfer, it's well worth it.
