★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Just did the drive, twice, in January. You don’t need a 4WD. I did it in a Toyota Corolla. You’ll see locals making the drive in those tall white vans you see everywhere. And occasionally guys on dual sport motorcycles.
As others have said, don’t tell your rental car company you are going there and don’t slide off the side of the cliff (you’ll actually die).
Amazing scenery. We went 9km in and didn’t make it to the end and it was starting to get dark so we turned around. You don’t want to make the drive back in the dark! Drive real slow!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ I went on a 4WD with Aiste Photography Tour. Aiste was a skillful & steady driver making the journey much more comfortable than I had imagined. She stopped by many scenic spots for breathtaking views and we also enjoyed a moment of tranquility having picnic at the Old School bench. A truly lovely trip.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Well worth doing this trek! Just make sure you have four-wheel drive and also MAKE SURE that your insurance will cover you, as some rental companies will not insure your vehicle on this road. It was dry when we did this road in April, but I don't think I'd attempt it if it was wet, as this road is only wide enough for one vehicle, with steep dropoffs. If you don't have the means to drive this yourself, some tour guides in the area offer tours along this track - some include access to rafting on the river and bungee jumping.
We came across a kid without its nanny, so keep your eyes peeled while driving along.
The scenery is incredible, and I recommend this drive if you can fit it into your schedule!

It is a very dangerous road indeed, with only a few places to let an opposing vehicle pass.
Luckily, in the evening there are not many of those.
Worth the drive it is, though!
