★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Been here a number of times over the years and have to give credit that the food is very nice. The last two times the dinner service has been very average though.
Went here with my wife few months ago and we thought that the wait for extremely long. When we arrived the table wasn’t ready, it took them over 30 minutes to sit us down, plus the food was really slow to arrive. We thought that it may be a one off and things were probably a bit of out of norm since COVID. We decided to come again as a whole family (7 of us) and this time the wait was even longer. We arrived at 6pm, got our orders taken, the small food items came out fairly quickly but the mains took over an hour and half to come out. We spoke to the manager who was very apologetic, however, when the food finally arrived some things were missing. The manager explained that they were very busy and kitchen was slower than usual. I would accept that but all the other tables around us that came at similar times, managed to get their all of their food and actually left by the time our mains arrived.
Overall the food has always been great but the service fell short.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ I know SPQR is one of Auckland’s OG fine dining hot spots. It took me ten years to finally hit them up since so many new restaurants pop up on a regular basis .. I have to say, it’s not up to the standard I expected but was still pretty good overall.
The ambiance is really nice, and the service was excellent. But I had mixed standards with the food overall.
The bread was nice as a starter but the calamari came out lukewarm, lacking flavour and some pieces a bit chewy. Calamari is a dish that really sings when done well, but you really can’t hide when it’s done bad. This really didn’t hit the mark.
I ordered my steak rare and it came out exactly that, perfectly cooked. However, the steak had zero seasoning .. again, lacking in flavour.
Loved the dessert, though. Sticky date pudding.. so good.
All in all, it was decent. I get why it was once a top spot but I think the Auckland food scene has matured a lot in recent years and I’d probably not rush back.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Their pizza was one of my favourite pizzas. From today, its not. I happily ordered the pizza after the lockdown. When I just got the pizza, it looked good. But, when I tasted it, it tasted burnt. And then, I found that the bottom of the dough was totally black. I think I can use this pizza instead of a coal briquette. Thanks for giving me a briquette.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ 2nd visit to SPQR and it was just as delicious as the first time. Service is good and the menu has something for everyone. Don't skip dessert either, the sticky date pudding was amazing.

The food was exceptional and the service was excellent, with waiters and waitresses regularly replenishing our waters and cocktails without having to ask. The portions were substantial, and the ingredients were of great quality and nicely presented. Highly recommended!
