I'm from Poland, but i watched many videos about this crash. I just can't believe that something like this happened in Christmas. I don't even want to know what the victims' families were thinking when they when they found out about the accident and the death of their loved one. Let us hope that such cases will not happen anymore. [*]

Definitely definitely carve out time in your trip or drive - you have to visit this place!! It's free. Also it's an excellent, must know chapter of true NZ history. They have added toilets and sign posted a river/bush walk. They even have a piece of the wreck of the train. On a blue sky day when you stand with the "new" bridge and Ruahepu in the same view - it's very hard to imagine something so powerful and so far away, destroying as much as it did.

A historical place of one of New Zealand's worst tragedies and the worst Rail Accident in New Zealand. Recently have put new information boards up around the car park area that explains about the area and what happened. Every year on the 24th of December is a memorial service and is well worth attending. Definitely some history with this place

I wasn't expecting to come across this memorial on our journey. I knew about the tragedy and it was educational to be where it occurred.

Amazing and very moving. The train crash was well before my time but to see the site looking so tranquil today made it very poignant. Especially when a goods train rumbled across the bridge!
