When I took over the original ‘kayak to the carvings company’ in Lake Taupo, I combined three of my passions – the outdoors, kayaking, and people.
Originally known as Wilderness Escapes, I renamed the business Taupo Kayaking Adventures to capture the essence of what we were offering – tailored adventures around this beautiful and historic area. I have continued the proud traditions of Wilderness Escapes and its commitment to the highest quality service, with safety paramount at all times.
With a team of experienced, passionate guides, our adventures are open to everyone – from a single kayaker or walker, to a small group – families, friends, clubs, corporates, school or church groups, through to backpackers and camper-van travellers, from beginners to experienced kayakers.

Our purpose-built trailer means we can access many major waterways around Taupo, and transport can be arranged to all entry and exit points, offering a greater level of flexibility.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ We did the kayak down the river from Gates Park - it was brilliant! Don't get put off if the weather is not good - they give you a water-proof jacket. Our guide was amazing, knowledgeable and great fun to be with. The weather was drizzle/rain but nothing can take away from the beauty of the Waikato. I will do this again next time we're in Taupo - highly recommend.

River Float Tour is great for beginners and families with kids as little as 5 years old, as well as adults looking for a relaxing and enjoyable experience.
Will totally come back for a Maori Carvings tour next time.

Legend was fantastic - so personable and knowledgeable about the area. It was a perfect way to spend a relaxing morning on the lake (while still feeling like we’d been active!)

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Our half day lake kayak tour was cancelled due to the forecast wind but we were offered the river float experience instead. There was clear communication of options and prompt refund of the price difference.
The river float experience was excellent. The guides were informative and friendly, with an excellent sense of humour. We felt safe the entire time, even with inexperience on the water and a 7 year old.
The information given about the area and features of the river added to the experience and it is clear the guides love the river and give it the respect it deserves.
We will be booking the half day tour next time we are in Taupo. Cannot recommend this company enough.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ "What a legend!" Our guide Legend was a very professional and genuine guy. He was thorough with his briefing and instructions so we felt very safe throughout.
It was also lovely to gain a bit of insight into Maori history as Legend would gather us occasionally and speak to us about the land.
It was great fun out in the water and a good way to shed a bit of xmas weight. Would highly recommend. Had a lovely day with Legend guiding us!!! Cheers Legend!
