About Taupo Museum and Art Gallery
Overview
Building over pipelines is not a recommended practice and will only be considered by council in exceptional circumstances, where no suitable alternative exists.
Approval from council is required before undertaking any physical works activity over or within the zone of influence of the public water, wastewater or stormwater pipes and associated assets which may cause damage to or restrict access to those assets. This includes permanent structures and includes constructing retaining walls, cantilevered structures, removing existing cover material or placing additional fill material.
The zone of influence is defined as any building or structure, retaining wall or earthworks within a minimum of 1.5 metres of a main or asset and/or the same distance from the pipe as half the depth of the pipe.
In many cases formal easements over services do not exist, however council has rights and powers over all council services via the Local Government Act and associated Bylaws. The following guidelines align with easement facility requirements associated with new developments. These include the minimum easement width being 3.0 metres, or greater with pipes deeper than 3.0 metres. No soakholes, buildings, internal fences or other structures or access impediments within the area of the easement. Boundary fences and driveways are normally permitted within the easements.
The sections and guidelines below are used when considering whether building over water services can be permitted.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ A lovely little spot to stop off and explore the current exhibition of the Maori culture and they also have the changing exhibitions also. There is a garden on display which won the a Chelsea design award i believe it was, a few years ago, which was nice to see. They also have a nice gift shop with many little books of useful things which i rather enjoyed. A fantastic place and if youre a library member you can enter for free.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ It’s tiny teeny and they charge you $5 for a 10 minute worth of visit. Go to the one in New Plymouth. It’s miles better.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Definitely make time to see this, as it is very well done. The labelling is excellent and of international standard. Someone described the museum as quaint. Maybe quaint as small in size but that is a plus, as you can drown in content at some museums and I thought it was all highly professional.
Also a great place to go on a rainy day. Good parking outside. $5 adult entry. $3 for Seniors and free to locals. A very manageable size but we still managed to spend two hours there.
There is a waka, well displayed Maori items, a comprehensive early forestry display, a miniature diorama of a logging operation which was amazing, a Moa skeleton, local rocks you can touch, an early caravan and a diary about trips, a Maori meeting house, items the early settlers would have used and several audio visual displays.
The most fascinating visual display to me was one by the National film unit on early tourism in the area.
In an adjacent room is a display of the earliest aerial photographs by White's Aviation. All are hand coloured and there is an audio visual describing the people who did this. This display may be temporary.
Look for the red roof at the back of the park near the Library. Not far from the i-site where the Visitor Information Centre is located.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Very fun and interesting. A small fee of 5$ is expected if you are not local. You will get everything explained but there is still some lack of information on how to go around and it's rather small. (Taupo is small, too, so it was expected.)

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ This is a lovely and well organised museum. We only had an hour and we ran out of time before it closed. It has some interesting information on the volcano, the forestry history and is well balanced with the Maori stories. One of the highlights for me were the journal entries for peoples caravan holidays to Taupo in the 50’s & 60’s. Well worth a visit.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ It's a small cute museum ! If you are a student it's only $3 entry fee (this includes any uni here in NZ). There is a bit of history on Taupo - especially on the hot steams. They have couple of local maori things in the museum
Overall it can be done within 20minutes. Highly recommended - don't forget to check out their mini garden
