Do not contact this place unless you want an argument. If your trying to access mental health services these people will not advise. You need to go to your Gp who will fill out the appropriate forms for psychiatric intervention. If trying to get someone help avoid Te Haika - Te Haika in Wellington is staffed by dregs who when collecting their pay checks love to abuse and be incredibly rude/annoying. I promise you there is little point ringing these people and I suggest you might like to avoid them completely going forward. Actually, avoid at all costs.

honestly would give it zero stars if i could. Caller made me feel delusional and even though i was in an insanely bad situation she told me to "go to a GP and then contact later" completely incompetent and with no empathy. Please do not use this service. I rang because I felt panicked over my situation and she made me feel absolutely stupid

So the website says you can call on behalf of someone you're worried about, but I just called up and the woman immediately said I had to pass the phone over to a friend who is already vulnerable and struggling to communicate. Had a long phonecall that felt like talking to a clueless receptionist rather than someone trained. Suggested upping her meds over the phone. Meds help but if you're already getting support for medication from a GP, a psychiatrist, and a psychologist, you probably aren't calling Te Haika for advice on your dosage ? not appropriate to try and suggest that over the phone anyway??? How is that going to help now while things are urgent?? Friend got upset and hung up but she didn't seem to care. My advice to this organization would be to rethink your triage methods quite seriously. They're already inaccessible for people in a state of emergency by forcing them to call up on their own behalf, no other options. How many people does this miss :(

They treat me with no respect, low empathy, no integrity, no transparency. A long waiting and difficult process. Some of their staff do not have the skill and empathy to do this job. They try to put me on pills (anti depressant) which my GP could just provide, and advice it would be an uncertain waiting time frame until the next step. Every week, they have 1 team meeting to discuss about your case. The staff who was handling my case was sick, then busy with others, then he got multiple reasons to miss his team weekly meeting. Then after he met with them, they came up and changed their treatment plan every week, and each time they changed their plan, you will have to wait without any idea when they are next available to help(as they are either busy, or they do not have the resources to help you). And while waiting for them to meet with you, you can just keep taking drugs. They also advise if you are in danger, feeling suicidal, you remember to make your way to the hospital. And if you cant wait, or request for a faster handling of the situation, they advise you to pay for your own treatment elsewhere. What an pleasant experience dealing with them. A waste of time, energy, killing hope, killing dignity. Some of their staff who do admin work via phone are lovely.

Sad place where sad people work ( with one exception - you know who you are ). Place should probably be closed down. Do not expect mental health admission or anything good to come from interaction with Te Haika. Probably don’t bother -

Waited 18 hours in er for these people to come see me as a mandatory part of my stay. Had a man tell me I was putting myself in my situation (extreme mental illness, financial despair due to disability) and it was basically my fault. If I just ~didn’t~ be like that it’d all go away! It’s a miracle I didn’t kill myself that night. I’ve decided from then on that I would genuinely rather die than ever be stuck in hospital talking to them, or even on the phone with them. Possibly the worst imaginable service. Not even specifically for the mentally distressed, just in general. Absolutely shocking. Horrible people.

I rang last night to express concern that the β€˜aliens had landed in the back yard again’. The aliens land in my back yard every month, like clockwork. I thought the staffer β€˜Mel’ brilliant for being empathetic and even going so far as to say β€˜I know it seems real’. So nice to have genuine caring people working at Te Haika. I have to rate this conversation. - although I hope the aliens don’t land in my back yard ( next full moon :)
