Te Kāinga Mārire - Merrilands

4.3/5 based on 8 reviews

Welcome to Te Kainga Marire

Te Kainga Marire - Maori for the peaceful encampment - is a skilfully designed inner-city native garden that mimics - and even improves - New Zealand's natural environment.

Situated in a once weedy New Plymouth valley, Te Kainga Marire is now considered to be one of few private gardens of international significance by the prestigious RNZIH New Zealand Gardens Trust.

The garden wraps around the Poletti-Clarkson family home, snuggles up to a coastal swamp forest remnant and pa site and spills on to the neighbouring river reserve and Te Henui walkway leading to the city and sea.

This is a harmonious garden that weaves subtle textures and colours with quirky forms. Lush ferns, wetland plants, alpine treasures and native trees here make up a microcosm of the New Zealand landscape - a gem of Middle Earth.

Unfortunately it was wet and cold when I visited during the festival. But what a charming garden full of hidden treasures and fascinating plants. Every corner is a wonder.

Best place ever!!!! I love walking my dogs down here everyday I have a possible chance. Would highly recommend it. Lots of walking, good for biking.

Was an interesting place to visit, using the surrounding Bush to advantage, did feel that the $10 per person entrance fee was a high for the time it took to walk around.

Wow! If you have an average size section and want to be inspired as to what you can create in your space... Go check out this garden! Te Kainga Marire is stunning. I have been trying to think of words to describe it but I can't. Honestly 10 out of 5 stars.

This was my highlight of the taranaki garden festival 2020. It is an amazing NZ native garden. Each pocket is an sample of different locations throughout NZ. It is literally the life works of this lovely couple and can't be missed.

Brilliant spot. The garden is around the owners house and has great pathways through it. Although smaller than anticipated this was actually quite nice as it made it all the more special! Favorite features were the glow worm tunnel and giant lemons.

This is a very disappointing garden and 3 times more expensive than many significantly better gardens. It is over grown, dilapidated and and in a generally poor state. They are trading on their appearance in a global list of important gardens in 2008! A rip off
