The Keyhole is a natural tunnel made by geologic features and erosion through the eastern end of Taitomo Island. It is a popular place for photos, and for lounging in the swimming hole adjacent to it. When the tide is coming in, or the waves are high, the water crashing through the Keyhole can be spectacular. Be very careful near the opening if the waves are rough, and it’s better to not try to venture inside. To get to the Keyhole at low tide, just keep walking south on Piha Beach until you pass the Tasman lookout and you will see the island and the Keyhole on your right. If the tide is up and the beach access is blocked, take the trail at the end of the south parking area for Piha Beach up to the Tasman Lookout, then just keep walking past the Lookout until the trail winds back down to the beach. When you reach the beach, you will first see the Blue Pool and the Gap. (Another nice swimming place) Walk to your right towards Taitomo Island and you will see the Keyhole
