About Transfercar
What is Transfercar?
We're a service that helps rental car companies to transfer cars between their branches while offering a way for travellers to travel for free. Here you can search relocation cars and campervans from the majority of New Zealand rental car companies.
How can the rental cars be free?
Rental car companies are spending large amounts of money on transferring cars between their branches, in order to position their fleet for new hires. They can either use expensive trucks or trains or they can let you drive it for free. The rental operators win, you win.

Who can become a Transfercar driver?
We are constantly looking for more drivers. Families, students, backpackers, event-goers, seniors or other travellers are all welcome. All that is required is that you are over a certain age (18, 21 or 25 depending on the rental operator) and have a full driving license valid in New Zealand (including from overseas).
How do I book a transfercar?
You can search or browse for all the transfer cars available on our website. When you have found a transfer you like, you make a request to drive that car. The rental car company will normally respond within 24 hours. If you are accepted, then the car is booked, and you receive the details on where to pick up the car and sign the contract.
Just like an ordinary rental car booking, except the rental price on the contract is zero, or just a few dollars depending on the relocation deal.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ I have used this twice now, from Kerikeri to Auckland and from Queenstown to Auckland. Both times, pick up was quick and easy, with drop off even easier. The vehicles were exactly as expected, with staff happy to help with any queries or concerns.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Just used Transfercar for the first time to take my brother on a road trip from Wellington to Auckland. It was a strange and kind of surreal experience picking the rental car and not having to pay for it.
One of the few things in life that seems too good to be true, but actually isn't!
I'll definitely be making use of this service again in the future and recommend it to everyone. Why is this service still so under the radar? The even gave us a free tank of gas!!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ I used Transfer car to travel from Wellington to Auckland. The car I was given to relocate was comfortable and had a spacious feels about it. At the pick up the staff were friendly and helpful. At the drop off in Auckland, equally efficient. I hadn't even got out of the car when a staff member appeared, gave the car a quick check, then a shuttle took me to the airport and dropped me at the bus stop.
I'd use the service again. The car was fuel efficient, just one tank for the trip.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Booked our transfer car from Wellington to Auckland through their website which was very easy and detailed all the costs etc. No hidden charges at all. It was way cheaper as we only had to fuel up once on the way and pay the reduce cover cost. Definitely recommend to use the transfer car.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Was such a cool experience using transfer car, we got a campervan from Christchurch to Auckland, at first the guy we had showing us the car wasn't very helpful, he asked if we had any questions and his answer to everything was I don't know I guess so, he knew nothing. And it also took around 2 hours which set us behind in our drive since we planned to leave way earlier thinking it wouldn't take that long. But the lady we had on the drop off was helpful lovely and got the handover done quickly which is what we wanted. was such a cool wee van had everything we didn't think it would have, the bed in the back was the most uncomfortable thing ever but the adventure we had was unforgettable! Being able to explore our country in a vehicle that's free is awesome! Thank you very much
