★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Waharau Regional Park owned by the Auckland Council is located on the East Coast Rd, eastern side of the rugged Hunua Ranges, 21km from Miranda. Landscape extends from the Hunua range to the coast of the Firth of Thames, but you need to cross the main road to access the beach. Visitors have several options like day tramping, enjoy the nearby seashore or camping overnight. You may spot some shore birds, including spotted shags New Zealand dotterels and oystercatchers. Blackberry Flats is one of the camp sites which can be entered through a farm gate (permission needed) and is a grassy paddock with toilet facilities, picnic tables, BBQ and a bush and creek boundary.
There are couple of tracks suitable for everybody - Short, low terrain walks or one that climb high up into the Hunua Ranges where you can have unparalleled views across the Firth of Thames and the Coromandel ranges. Shortest one, Puriri Grove Track is 1.4km long or a 30 minute loop, and the longest one Waharau Ridge Loop Track is 11km long and takes about 4 hours. There is a small but beautiful creek flowing across the park, alongside of the Blueberry camping grounds where you can see eels, some of them as long as a meter.
