★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Outstanding café. We did not expect to find a place like this when we stopped in Waikari for a family walk. I've been to a lot of cafés and this would make the shortlist for the best of all of them! Incredible food, friendly service, and inviting and cosy interior with a nice atmosphere.
Our food and coffee was amazing. The sensational steak and beer pie served with a side of rich onion gravy absolutely ruined my goal to eat less meat thisy year!
The only point I would make to the negative is that - while incredible - the lunch options were a little high grade for young children. We chose a ham and tomato crouissant for our 6 year old, and it was 'proper' ham with a delicious salsa plus a rich chive and cream cheese spread. Absolutely delicious... just too much for our kids to take! Their loss, but maybe - and only if the cafe wants to attract more parents with young children - a couple of basic options could be good for the kids. With the caveat of a) we were looking at the cabinet food only so maybe there was another option that could have been better, and b) maybe the cafe doesn't want to cater to young kids and prefers a more mature (and quiet) clientele, and that's fine as well!
Like I said, absolutely incredible food, amazing service, excellent decor, and one of my favourite cafes of all time, so take the part about kids' food with a pinch of salt! ;)
