★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Have always enjoyed popping in here on the way back from Hanmer. Called in today for lunch and was really surprised. The inside has been completely revamped. It is lovely and light and welcoming, lots of tables although it was really busy. We all really enjoyed our meals. Definitely somewhere I’d make a point of stopping again.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Stayed in one of the cottages. Was a nice period stone cottage to stay in. Unfortunately the yapping dog next door where one of the staff or owners stayed made it rather difficult to relax on my holiday during the day and evening. Power going off for a prolonged period of time and no update from staff or owner when enquiring after what was going on - was unacceptable. Food at the hotel restaurant was stodgy pub food. All of which made the whole thing feel like an overpriced out of the way placed that is better avoided than of note.
And I love it when an establishment feels the need to give an elabourate response full of excuses and telling me why they feel my experience is wrong haha. Tells alot about the character of the owner.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The owner was very aggressive when we pointed out that there was a hair in our food. ....saying Don't play games with me...He took away the plate to the kitchen. Came back said that it was fennel and not hair?????like we customers are dumb n don't know the difference between a strand of hair n fennell. Nasty pathetic service. If he had only apologised instead of telling me off for an error quite easily possible in a kitchen on a hot day....I would have been ok. But to be treated the way I was.....just goes to show.....he shouldn't be in the hospitality sector. Would never go there n nor recommend the place to others. I guess the owner doesn't care as we were passing customers to hanmer springs.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The Hurunui Hotel is a must if your just driving past, they have excellent staff, lovely venue and in such a beautiful spot. There food is amazing and there are so many great photo locations around the hotel including an ivy corridor. If you want to go somewhere for a lunch or dinner, highly recommend the Hurunui Hotel. One of the best places in the country.
