A concrete cairn sits to the left of the driveway to the Sophia Trust (previously the Methodist Church), on Queen Street, Waiuku. The monument recalls the history of the hill before the church was built. Once the site of a Maori village known as Te Pae O Kaiwaka, it became the site of a stockade in 1863 and served as a place of shelter for immigrants in 1865. The inscription reads: "On this hill / once a Maori village / site, stood the Waiuku / Stockade during the / Waikato War of / 1863 / and the tents of the / immigrants in / 1865."
