Incredible quality Eco Lodge set alongside a beautiful river. Caught a trout and had a local Moorepork ( new Zealand native) owl visit us most nights. Haven't seen one of those up close for well over 20 years!!. The bird life was astonishing! The rooms are very good, but internet is less than acceptable. They must upgrade and improve the web access.... Overall..highly recommended.

Not a current review. We stayed there on our honeymoon in 1993 and it was a wonderful experience. The husband/owner took us on hikes and canoeing while the wife/owner prepared gourmet meals

This is the best game in town if you want to see tawaki (Fiordland crested penguins). I saw some on the public Monro Beach as well, but it was from a distance. You can never get super close to tawaki because they are sensitive to human intrusion, not you can get much closer here and have a lot more information about their conservation with the guide from the lodge than on your own. The lodge also had the best food I've had in New Zealand for breakfast and dinner. They do not typically have young children staying with them, but the owners and chef were extremely accommodating about the schedule changes, etc. we had to make to care for our toddler. It's pricey, though, and there's no stores or anything even remotely nearby if you forgot anything or want a snack.

Lake Moeraki is one of the most special and unique places to visit in New Zealand, the lodge is set among some of the most incredible accessible wilderness awe I’ve been lucky enough to experience. The rooms, the Dining and the guided lodge activities are all world class. A NZ must see!

The setting was gorgeous, the rooms adequate, and the food quite good. Jerry and Brooke's nature walk was interesting as was the eel feeding, star gazing and glowworm viewing. We could not have asked for a prettier evening. My only complaints were that the sand fleas were very bad and they came in through the room screens, so they were in the bathroom and bedroom areas biting you when you least suspected. This made my next few days miserable with itching. The other problem that I and the others in my group had, was the cost of the kayaking activity. I believe that it was over $150. We did a couple of kayak activities on the water and landed on a little beach area where we looked at a couple of cool ancient trees, and had a cookie, and a cup of coffee. Jerry told a couple of stories, then we headed back to the lodge. The entire trip was maybe a little over two hours with a big part of it on shore where once again, the sand flies were thick. I think that the free kayaking offered would have been sufficient. The owners and staff work hard and the setting is hard to beat.

This place is definitely one of the highlights of my entire life. My wife and I spent two days (not enough) here and I’d say words don’t really describe how superb this place is. As a lodge it’s totally outstanding β€” food is great, rooms are comfortable, the wine is what you’d expect in the South Island β€” but what makes this place extraordinary are the guided nature walks and tours the staff take you on. Guided mostly by Gerry and Alex, we did everything from explore the New Zealand rainforest and feeding eels to seeing penguins! Gerry, Anne, Alex, and the rest of the staff were wonderful and if I ever find myself back in the South Island, I’ll be sure to go back.

A wonderful experience "away from it all". There's limited wifi, virtually no mobile reception, and no TVs. But that's what makes this lodge special, and perfect. Gerry and Anne are perfect hosts, well supported by Darran and the wonderful chef Jamie who overfed us with the most wonderful food. We saw glowworms. We saw eels. We saw Harry, the kotuku (white heron). We did a fabulous guided walk with Gerry along a rugged west coast beach where we searched for pounamu (I found a piece) and toasted marshmallows on a driftwood fire. A fabulous place to unwind.

Wilderness Lodge is an amazing experience. The accommodation is really comfortable - spacious and everything you need. It is not "luxury lodge" which is actually great because you have so much to do you spend very little time in your room. The walks are spectacular - accompanied by the most knowledgeable guide - Wilderness Lodge owner and famous conservationist Gerry McSweeney. Beach walks to see wild life or collect jade, bush walks with amazing forests, wetlands and identify the myriad of native birds, kayaking on Lake Moeraki with water birds and night walks to star gaze and see unique glowworms in the trees are all provided. At the end of the day their are cocktails in the lounge and the meals are stunning. We loved it so much we have been twice in the past 6 months!
